Description
Horohoro Racer, whose birth name is Horokeu Usui, is a young shaman from the Ainu tribe of Hokkaido, Japan. He carries this nickname, which was given to him by a childhood friend, as a preferred alternative to his birth name, which he associates with painful memories. Proud of his Ainu heritage, he was raised with a deep respect for nature and the belief in the law of the strongest preying on the weakest, balanced with a sense of gratitude for the lives taken to sustain one's own.
Good-natured, cheerful, and highly competitive, Horohoro presents himself with an energetic and often boisterous demeanor. He is easily provoked and his moods can shift quickly, but he also possesses a serious and responsible side that emerges in dangerous situations. Despite his considerable practical skills, which include woodcarving and crafting, he admits to being terrible at academics. A deep, secretive sorrow lies beneath his jovial exterior, stemming from a childhood tragedy involving a girl named Tamiko. After he was forbidden from associating with her, she followed him into the mountains and perished in the snow. He blames himself for her death, and this guilt fuels his primary motivation for entering the Shaman Fight: to create a vast field of butterbur plants. This act is a memorial to Tamiko, as the butterbur field was a special place to them both, and is intended to create a sanctuary for the tiny spirit people, the Koro Pokkuru.
Horohoro becomes Yoh Asakura's first opponent in the preliminary rounds of the Shaman Fight. Though he loses this match, he quickly becomes a close ally and friend to Yoh, joining his core group. He has a notoriously volatile rivalry with Tao Ren, whom he constantly argues with and fights alongside. Despite their bickering, Horohoro deeply cares for Ren as a teammate and friend. During the second round of the tournament, he forms a team called Team "The Ren" alongside Ren and Chocolove McDonnell. His relationship with his younger sister, Pirica, is also significant; she is his staunch supporter, creates new battle equipment for him, and pushes him in his training.
Throughout the story, Horohoro undergoes notable development. Initially a bit of a brash rival, he matures into a more dependable and powerful warrior. He learns techniques such as the Fumon Tonko, a method of dodging attacks by reading an opponent's furyoku flow. His secretive past is eventually confronted, and the spirit of his childhood friend, now his guardian ghost Kororo, reveals her true identity before returning to her small nature spirit form. As the Shaman Fight progresses, Horohoro is identified as one of the Five Elemental Warriors, which leads to him gaining a powerful new ally, the Spirit of Rain.
His abilities as a shaman are centered on the manipulation of ice. His primary guardian ghost is Kororo, a small and cheerful nature spirit who is later revealed to be the spirit of Tamiko. His primary medium for combat is his snowboard, which he also uses for transportation and swift attacks. By channeling Kororo into his snowboard, he creates his first Oversoul to freeze water vapor in the air, allowing him to launch ice projectiles, create barriers, summon ice swords, and unleash massive avalanches. His sister later gifts him an Ainu prayer stick called an ikupasuy, which becomes a new medium for a more powerful Oversoul. Under the tutelage of the shaman Pascal Avaf, he develops the Nipopo Gauntlets, an armor-type Oversoul that can flash-freeze opponents with such intensity that their frozen limbs or entire bodies shatter. Upon being chosen as an Elemental Warrior, he gains the Spirit of Rain, a grand spirit capable of producing an infinite amount of holy water. At his peak, his furyoku, or spiritual energy, is measured to be around 120,000 units.
