Description
Mikihisa Asakura was born on October 9, 1958, in Hiroshima, Japan, under the birth name Mikihisa Maki. Before becoming a shaman, he lived as an unemployed musician and aspiring singer inspired by John Lennon, busking near train stations. He met Keiko Asakura after she asked him to play a song following a breakup, and they began a relationship. Because the Asakura family had no male heir at the time, Mikihisa married into the family and took the Asakura surname to continue the lineage.

After marriage, he trained under Keiko’s parents, Yohmei and Kino Asakura, in the ways of shugendō, becoming a skilled shugenja. His life changed dramatically when Keiko became pregnant with twins, one of whom was the reincarnation of the powerful shaman Hao Asakura. Yohmei ordered both babies killed to prevent Hao from growing up in time for the Shaman Fight, but during the delivery, the Spirit of Fire attacked. Mikihisa tried to protect Yohmei and suffered severe burns to his face. He has worn a wooden bird mask ever since, partly to hide the scars and partly as a sign of shame for failing to stop Hao.

This event shaped much of Mikihisa’s personality and motivations. He carries deep guilt for not preventing Hao’s escape and dedicates himself to rigorous training around the world, scaling mountains without equipment to strengthen his body and spirit. He is compassionate and family-oriented, often speaking of the importance of family love. He can appear laid-back and occasionally absent-minded, but he is disciplined and serious when the situation demands. Yoh describes his father as old-fashioned, and Mikihisa sometimes comes across as eccentric, such as when he wears only his mask and underwear during the Shaman Fight tournament.

Mikihisa’s role in the story is primarily as a supportive father and mentor. He watches over Yoh from the shadows, observing his battles and offering guidance when necessary. He takes responsibility for teaching the secret techniques of the Cho Senji Ryakketsu to Yoh and his allies, including teaching Ren Tao the technique Fumon Tonkou. He also forms Team Kabbalahers with Redseb and Seyram, the sons of his late friend Professor Camel Munzer, to ensure that the powerful Golem does not fall into the wrong hands. During the Shaman Fight, his team qualifies among the top six, but he voluntarily withdraws to allow both Yoh’s team and Ren’s team to advance, believing that the younger generation has greater potential for growth.

Key relationships include his wife Keiko, his son Yoh, and his other son Hao, whom he still refers to as his child. He also takes Tamao Tamamura as his apprentice and often takes her on his training journeys. He is a close friend of Camel Munzer and honors his promise to care for Redseb and Seyram after Munzer’s death.

After the Shaman Fight concludes and Hao’s plans are thwarted, Mikihisa lives a peaceful life, though he dies in a car accident while returning from a pachinko parlor. His spirit reportedly vanishes, fearing his wife’s anger.

As a shugenja, Mikihisa possesses high furyoku and can summon gods and Buddha spirits. His guardian spirits are the ancient mountain gods Imari, a kitsune (fox), and Shigaraki, a tanuki (raccoon dog). He uses stones as his medium for Over Souls, and his spirits can shapeshift, allowing him to create multiple copies of himself in combat. He combines this ability with martial arts, making him extremely difficult to hit. His practice of shugendō grants him access to powerful spiritual techniques.
