Lapis-chan is a white female hamster introduced in the second season of the Hamtaro anime. She has a yellow bob cut hairstyle that is mostly concealed by a blue hood, and she wears a matching blue cape. Lapis lives with her younger sister Lazuli in a house called Jewelry House, and the two are owned by Maggie O'Hara. Lapis and Lazuli work in a magical candy world known as Sweet Paradise, which the main Ham-Ham group visits frequently in later episodes. Lapis has a somewhat stubborn personality but is a responsible and caring older sister who looks out for Lazuli. She is drawn to shiny, gem-like objects, and her name is derived from the gemstone lapis lazuli. Lapis makes her first appearance in episode 194 of the series. Her presence introduces a minor conflict when she gives Hamtaro a kiss, causing Bijou to become jealous and view Lapis as a rival. Lapis is generally helpful and becomes a recurring character during the second season, but her appearances become rarer after 2005, and she does not appear in the third season at all. Lapis is almost always seen wearing her blue hood; the only time her full hair is visible occurs in episode 218.
