Description
Leon Alcott, also known as Leon Orcot, is a central character in the anime Pet Shop of Horrors. He is a young, hot-headed police detective who becomes obsessed with investigating the mysterious pet shop owned by Count D, located in the Chinatown district of Los Angeles. Leon is convinced that Count D is a criminal mastermind behind a series of gruesome and inexplicable deaths and disappearances that seem to be linked to the shop and its unusual customers. Driven by an iron will and a strong sense of justice, he is determined to gather enough evidence to arrest D and shut down the pet shop, refusing to accept any supernatural explanations for the events he encounters, even as evidence mounts against his skepticism.

Leon has a brash and impulsive personality, often acting on his instincts and temper before thinking things through. He is also portrayed as being extremely lecherous, frequently chasing after women, which sometimes distracts him from his investigative work. His name, blonde hair, and prideful demeanor subtly draw a comparison to a lion, a connection that is not lost on Count D or those who know him. Despite his initial hostility and distrust, Leon forms a complex and close relationship with Count D over the course of the story, as the two are repeatedly drawn together by the cases Leon investigates. Their dynamic evolves from outright antagonism to a strange form of friendship, with D even saving Leon's life when he is in mortal danger.

Leon serves as the connecting thread throughout the anime's episodic narrative, as his ongoing investigation provides a sense of continuity between the standalone tales of Count D's customers. As the series progresses, his character undergoes subtle development. His rigid refusal to believe in the supernatural is challenged more and more, though he never fully abandons his detective's logic. He also receives two pets from Count D himself: a flowering plant and a butterfly. Unlike most of D's other pets, which are sold to teach their owners harsh lessons, these creatures are given to Leon to help him through difficult emotional times, indicating a unique consideration from the Count. Leon's role is that of the skeptical, grounded counterpoint to the supernatural world, and his growth comes from slowly learning that not everything can be solved with handcuffs and rational proof.
