Description
Nambara, whose full name is Koutarou Nanbara, is a main character in the anime Hand Maid May. He is a wealthy and eccentric young man who describes himself as the self-proclaimed best friend and worst enemy of the protagonist, Kazuya Saotome. Possessing an egomaniacal personality, Nambara is deeply jealous of Kazuya's abilities and constantly frustrated by being outdone by him, despite Kazuya's relative poverty. This jealousy drives much of his behavior throughout the story.

Nambara's primary motivation is to see Kazuya suffer and to prove his own superiority. He is the catalyst for the entire plot: he deliberately gives Kazuya a computer virus under the pretense of helpful software, an act that leads Kazuya to accidentally order the cyberdoll May from the Cyberdyne Corporation. Once May arrives, Nambara becomes determined to have her taken away from Kazuya, primarily by leveraging Kazuya's inability to pay for her. To this end, he enlists the help of several other cyberdolls, such as Sara, who he also gets to do his chores in exchange for ramen. However, his schemes repeatedly backfire, as each cyberdoll he sends ends up developing feelings for Kazuya.

Nambara's role in the story evolves from a straightforward antagonist to a complex figure. While he is initially hostile toward May in her small form, his attitude completely changes when May is upgraded to human size. At a fireworks festival, he falls head over heels in love with the enlarged May, which adds a comedic layer to his rivalry with Kazuya. Despite his antagonism, Nambara's relationship with Kazuya is one of mutual dependence and rivalry. A later revelation shows that Nambara and Kazuya are destined to co-found the Cyberdyne Corporation, the company that produces the cyberdolls, and that their descendants will continue to run it. This ties Nambara's personal history to the larger temporal and corporate elements of the story.

In terms of development, Nambara remains consistently pompous and scheming, but his infatuation with human-sized May reveals a softer, more vulnerable side. He does not undergo a drastic character change but gains additional layers through his future connection to Cyberdyne. His notable abilities are not supernatural; rather, his wealth and influence allow him to manipulate situations and people. He is also shown to be technically savvy enough to create a computer virus. Visually, he is described as having short blue hair and black eyes, fitting his flamboyant personality. Overall, Nambara serves as the primary human antagonist and rival, driving much of the comedic conflict while also being an essential piece of the series' larger narrative puzzle.
