Description
Andromon is a powerful Android Digimon, classified as an Ultimate level with the Vaccine attribute. Its background establishes it as a prototype for Cyborg Digimon, a machine-based being manufactured alongside the organically-based cyborg Boltmon. The technology developed for Andromon was later appropriated for other Digimon such as MetalGreymon and Megadramon. As a prototype, Andromon possesses neither will nor emotion by its original design, acting faithfully according to its programmed behavior. However, the specific Andromon encountered in Digimon Adventure was upgraded with a program based on acquired data, giving it a stronger sense of self. The name itself is derived from the word android.
In terms of personality, Andromon initially appears as a purely mechanical and emotionless entity, driven by its core programming. Despite this, it demonstrates a clear capacity for justice, gratitude, and loyalty. When freed from external control, Andromon is a wise and gentle being who becomes a steadfast ally to the DigiDestined. Its motivations are primarily defensive and heroic, seeking to protect the Digital World from evil forces. Andromon shows a strong sense of duty, organizing resistance against powerful villains and willingly sacrificing itself to buy time for others.
Andromon plays several significant roles throughout Digimon Adventure. It is the first Ultimate level Digimon the DigiDestined encounter on File Island. Initially found lifeless and trapped in a factory, Andromon is accidentally infected by one of Devimon's Black Gears when the children free it. Controlled by the gear, Andromon attacks the group, easily overpowering Greymon and Garurumon. Tentomon's evolution into Kabuterimon allows the Champion level Digimon to target the gear on Andromon's leg, destroying it and freeing Andromon. As an apology for the attack, Andromon shows the children the way out of the factory.
Later, during the Dark Masters' conquest of the Digital World, Andromon becomes a key resistance fighter. It fights against Machinedramon in the latter's territory and is the first ally to find the DigiDestined after they are sent underground. Initially mistaking Tai and Izzy for Machinedramon's henchmen, Andromon quickly clarifies its mission to organize a resistance. When Machinedramon attacks, Andromon engages the Dark Master in combat, giving the children precious time to escape and regroup, which ultimately leads to WarGreymon defeating Machinedramon. In the final battle against Piedmon, Andromon again demonstrates its courage. It pulls Piedmon aside to fight alone, allowing the younger children to escape. Though Andromon is transformed into a keychain by Piedmon's magic, it is later restored to normal by MagnaAngemon and joins the final assault against Piedmon and his army of Vilemon.
In Digimon Adventure 02, Andromon reappears as a slave of the Digimon Emperor, controlled by a Dark Ring. It is deployed to attack the DigiDestined, but hesitates when confronting Kari. The memories of its previous encounters with the children, including a photograph it had taken of them, allow it to overcome the Dark Ring's control. Andromon breaks the ring and destroys a Control Spire, freeing the Guardromon in the city. This event demonstrates that the Dark Rings are insufficient to fully control Ultimate level Digimon.
Key relationships for Andromon include its bond with the original DigiDestined, particularly Tai, Izzy, and Kari. Kari's presence and pleas trigger its memory and help it break free from the Dark Ring. Andromon also shares a connection with the Guardromon, as it is seen protecting a city of them in the second series. Its primary antagonistic relationships are with the Dark Masters, especially Machinedramon and Piedmon, whom it bravely opposes despite being outmatched.
Andromon undergoes notable development across its appearances. It begins as a seemingly mindless machine under the Black Gear's control, but after being freed, it reveals a heroic and honorable nature. Its ability to later resist the Dark Ring through sheer force of memory and will shows a significant development beyond its prototype programming, which was designed to lack independent will or emotion. Andromon survives direct encounters with two of the Dark Masters, Machinedramon and Piedmon, an achievement unique among the allied Ultimate Digimon.
Andromon possesses formidable combat abilities befitting its Ultimate level. It is said to possess the fighting strength to fell any Digimon below Ultimate in a single blow. Its notable attacks include the Lightning Blade, also known as Spiral Sword, where it fires a blade of energy from an arm module. Its other signature attack is the Gatling Attack, or Gatling Missiles, which fires two smart homing missiles from its chest that chase enemies; these missiles can also open to reveal machine guns. Andromon is also equipped with radar target locks in its eye sockets to track its targets. In its appearances, it demonstrates incredible durability, shrugging off attacks from multiple Champion level Digimon and holding its own against Mega level Dark Masters.
