Description
Apokarimon, also known as Apocalymon, stands as the primary antagonist and final enemy faced in the original Digimon Adventure series. This being is not a conventional Digimon born through standard means. Instead, it is a unique, collective entity formed from the accumulated data, regrets, jealousy, and hatred of countless Digimon that perished or were eliminated during the natural process of evolution. Because it is composed of these discarded beings, Apokarimon often refers to itself using the plural "we," reflecting its nature as a gestalt consciousness of lost souls.

The background of Apokarimon is rooted in profound tragedy and bitterness. It was confined to an empty, pitch-black void of darkness on the other side of the Wall of Fire, a boundary in the ancient Digital World. From this desolate space, it could only watch as the "world of light," where successful Digimon and humans lived in happiness and warmth, continued to thrive. This existence of eternal loneliness and suffering caused it to curse the world of light, and it became driven by a deep-seated desire to inflict the same pain it endures upon all other living beings. Its ultimate goal is to destroy both the Digital and Real Worlds and create a dead world without evolution, growth, or hope, where it can rule over the darkness.

In the story, Apokarimon is the true source of the chaos that plagues the Digital World. It was the entity that granted power to the Dark Masters, the four powerful Mega-level Digimon who served as the primary antagonists in the latter half of the series. The defeat of the final Dark Master, Piedmon, does not restore peace, but instead allows Apokarimon to finally reveal itself to the Chosen Children. Upon its appearance, it expresses its resentment, questioning why the children and their Digimon get to live in joy and friendship while it was forced to disappear into sadness. It then demonstrates its terrifying power by using the signature attacks of previous enemies, including MetalSeadramon, Myotismon, Machinedramon, and Devimon, showing that it can harness the abilities of all the evil Digimon the children have fought.

The key relationships Apokarimon has are largely antagonistic and indirect. It is the hidden master of the Dark Masters, using them as pawns to reshape the Digital World and draw out the Chosen Children. It also directly despises the Chosen Children and their partner Digimon, seeing them as symbols of the light and hope it was denied. Its very existence is the antithesis of the DigiDestined's values of evolution, growth, and friendship.

Throughout the final battle, Apokarimon shows no development or redemption. It remains a single-minded force of nihilism and despair. Its personality is defined by this despair, but it is also shown to be sadistic, tormented, and seemingly insane. In some versions, it displays a dark, twisted sense of humor, mocking the children's situation. Its primary motivation is not conquest in a traditional sense, but a suicidal, spiteful desire to end all existence. When the Chosen Children, having learned that the power of their Crests resides within their own hearts, fight back and begin to destroy its physical form, Apokarimon resorts to its ultimate attack. It triggers a self-destruct technique known as Total Annihilation or Gran Death Big Bang, an explosion powerful enough to wipe out entire dimensions. It intends to take the children and both worlds with it in its final moments. However, the power of the children's Digivices contains the blast, and Apokarimon is destroyed alone, its data dissipating as the Digital World is reformatted and reborn.

Apokarimon possesses a wide array of notable abilities, making it one of the most formidable foes in the series. Its signature techniques include Reverse Digivolve, which allows it to capture an opponent in its claws and forcibly degenerate them to a lower evolutionary stage. It can also use Darkness Zone, an attack that deletes opponents by disassembling their data into ones and zeroes. Its most dangerous technique is the suicidal Total Annihilation. Furthermore, as demonstrated, it can morph its giant claw arms into the forms of past enemies to perfectly replicate their most powerful attacks. It also has the ability to self-regenerate, quickly healing wounds it inflicts on its own body. This combination of copied skills, forced de-evolution, and a catastrophic self-destruct mechanism makes Apokarimon a final enemy that embodies the ultimate threat of total annihilation.
