Description
Keel Lorentz serves as the enigmatic chairman of the secret organization SEELE and also heads the Human Instrumentality Committee, a subgroup of five individuals that directly oversees NERV's activities. His background before the cataclysmic Second Impact is largely shrouded in mystery, but he was an active figure in SEELE's early machinations. He collaborated directly with Gendo Ikari to orchestrate the United Nations' extensive cover-up that concealed the true nature of the Second Impact, including the details regarding the entity Adam and the ill-fated Katsuragi Expedition. Following this global catastrophe, he secretly supported the research group GEHIRN, which later evolved into its successor organization, NERV, as part of SEELE's long-term strategy.
Physically, Lorentz is an elderly man of Germanic appearance with slicked-back silver hair, typically clad in a high-collared green robe. One of his most distinctive features is the large red and yellow mechanical visor he wears over his eyes. While it is a cybernetic device, production materials indicate he still retains his human eyes beneath it. Sometime in the fifteen-year period following the Second Impact, the majority of his body below the neck was replaced with extensive cybernetic implants. When his organic components later dissolved into LCL, the mechanical remnants, which appeared to include a significant portion of his spinal column, were left behind.
Lorentz possesses a patient, calculating, and ruthless personality, fully committed to SEELE's ultimate goal. He speaks collectively on behalf of the organization, frequently using the pronoun "we," which underscores his role as the voice of a unified will rather than a solitary dictator. His stated belief is that humanity is burdened by sin and suffering, and he views the forced evolution of mankind into a single, godlike collective consciousness through the Human Instrumentality Project as a just and necessary salvation. While he tolerated Gendo Ikari's independent actions during the conflict with the Angels, viewing them as useful, his suspicion eventually gave way to direct confrontation. After the defeat of the final Angel, he delivered an ultimatum demanding control of Evangelion Unit-01 for SEELE's own Instrumentality, and when Gendo refused, he immediately ordered a military invasion of NERV headquarters to seize control by force.
Within the story, Lorentz functions as the primary antagonist and the supreme orchestrator of the Human Instrumentality Project. While Gendo Ikari is the visible commander on the ground, Lorentz represents the shadowy, powerful authority manipulating global politics and military power from behind the scenes, ultimately ordering the JSSDF to eliminate NERV. His most crucial relationship is with Gendo Ikari, which is a complex dynamic of temporary alliance and mutual manipulation. Both men worked together in the past and share the common goal of initiating Instrumentality, but each seeks to control its outcome for their own ends. This conflict leads to a final schism where Lorentz openly condemns Gendo to death. He also has a significant, albeit distant, connection to Kozo Fuyutsuki, who identifies him as the head figure of SEELE.
Lorentz exhibits little traditional character development, remaining a steadfast and unwavering agent of SEELE's ancient plan. His true nature is only physically revealed at the moment of Instrumentality, when his organic body dissolves into LCL and his cybernetic frame collapses, confirming his status as a being who had long ago abandoned most of his humanity to achieve his goal. He does not pilot an Evangelion or engage in direct combat, but his notable abilities lie entirely in his immense political influence and strategic foresight, which allow him to shape global events, command SEELE, and come within moments of successfully completing a plan that would rewrite the very fabric of human existence. His name itself is symbolic, derived from the nautical term "keel," referring to the structural backbone of a ship, combined with the surname of the Austrian biologist Konrad Lorenz, a founder of ethology, reflecting his role as a foundational pillar of SEELE's design for humanity.
