Mugihito
Description
Mugihito is the stage name of Makoto Terada, a veteran Japanese actor and voice actor born on August 8, 1944, in Musashino, Tokyo. He is also known for having used the stage names Omaeda Den and Amachi Mugihito earlier in his career. He comes from a family deeply rooted in traditional Japanese performing arts, being the son of kabuki actor Yoshizaburo Arashi V and the younger brother of voice actress Michie Terada.
His career in entertainment began at a very young age on the kabuki stage. He later pursued acting in television dramas and films, making his voice acting debut in 1967. His focus shifted more definitively toward voice acting in the 1980s after an audition for the anime series Dokaben sparked a deeper interest in the craft. In 1998, he established his own artistic space, and since 2012, he has served as the CEO of his own agency, Potato Village.
Mugihito has built an exceptionally prolific career, with hundreds of roles to his name across anime, video games, and dubbing (known as fukikae). He is widely recognized for his deep and distinguished voice, which he has lent to a vast array of characters. Among his most iconic anime roles are Keel Lorenz, the mysterious leader of Seele in the Neon Genesis Evangelion franchise; the elderly craftsman Kaseki in Dr. Stone; Kinzo Ushiromiya in Umineko no Naku Koro ni; and Doppo Orochi in the Baki the Grappler series. He has also played numerous other significant roles, including Yoshinobu Gakuganji in Jujutsu Kaisen, Rom in Re:ZERO -Starting Life in Another World-, and J. Geil in JoJo's Bizarre Adventure. In the world of video games, he is famously the voice of the villain Sigma in the Mega Man X series.
Beyond anime and games, Mugihito is a highly regarded figure in the field of dubbing foreign films and TV series. He is best known as the long-standing Japanese dub voice for actor Patrick Stewart, taking over the role of Captain Jean-Luc Picard in Star Trek: The Next Generation from its third season and continuing in subsequent films and series. He has also dubbed many other prominent actors, including Ben Kingsley and Lance Henriksen.
Throughout his decades-long career, Mugihito has frequently portrayed elderly characters, mentors, villains, and authority figures, though his range also extends to comedic roles. He has stated a personal fondness for playing villainous characters. His extensive filmography reveals recurring collaborations with many directors and fellow voice actors, including frequent appearances alongside Tessho Genda, Hochu Otsuka, and Takehito Koyasu, among others. Still active in his eighth decade, Mugihito continues to take on new roles in major anime series and films, maintaining his status as a living legend in the Japanese voice acting industry.
