Description
Keel Lorenz is the chairman of the secret organization Seele in the film Evangelion: 3.0 You Can (Not) Redo. Within this installment of the Rebuild of Evangelion tetralogy, Lorenz does not appear as a physical human. Instead, he is represented as one of several floating, monolithic black tablets, with his specifically identified as Seele 01. His voice is the only one heard from the council in this film, speaking on behalf of the group’s collective will.

Lorenz’s background is shrouded in mystery, but in this continuity, it is suggested that Seele has existed for millennia and has guided human civilization. His personality is that of a detached, calculating, and authoritative figure who views his organization’s ancient plan as the only path forward for humanity. Even as his existence comes to an end, he displays a sense of dignified acceptance and calm, believing firmly that his goals are about to be realized. His primary motivation remains the initiation of the Human Instrumentality Project, a plan to force the evolution of humanity by unifying all souls into a single, god-like being.

In the story of Evangelion: 3.0 You Can (Not) Redo, the Seele council, led by Lorenz, finds itself at odds with Gendo Ikari, the commander of Nerv. As the film reaches its climax and the Fourth Impact is set in motion, Gendo turns against Seele. He thanks them for their guidance but declares that he will now proceed with his own version of Instrumentality. It is at this moment that Gendo’s subordinate, Kōzō Fuyutsuki, begins turning off the Seele monoliths one by one. Unlike other members who are silenced without words, Lorenz is given a final moment. He accepts his deactivation with dignity, stating that their wish will be fulfilled and praying for the peaceful unification of all souls before his monolith is powered down, effectively ending his existence.

Key relationships for Lorenz in this film are primarily defined by his roles within the Seele council and his rivalry with Gendo. As the chairman, he is the foremost representative of Seele’s collective will, and his relationship with his own subordinates is one of shared purpose and a unified consciousness. His most significant relationship is with Gendo Ikari. While they were once collaborators, in this film they have become adversaries, as Gendo hijacks their shared plan for his own ends. Lorenz also has a connection to the Angel Kaworu Nagisa, having communicated with him on the moon in previous films to ensure Seele’s scenario unfolds.

Lorenz does not undergo traditional character development in this film. Instead, his narrative arc concludes. His development is defined by his final moment of transition: from a powerful, disembodied puppet master guiding events from the shadows to a passive participant who quietly accepts his own annihilation because it means his grand design is finally coming to pass.

Regarding notable abilities, Keel Lorenz in the Rebuild films has shed his physical form, and his primary ability is his existence as a consciousness residing within a monolith. This state implies a mastery over technology and the nature of the soul far beyond normal human limits. He wields no physical powers, but his authority is absolute. He commands Seele, an organization that has secretly shaped human history, and through it exerts control over the United Nations, Nerv, and the Instrumentality project itself, pulling the strings of the entire world from a hidden location. His power is purely political and ideological, enforced by a long-prepared plan that nearly succeeds in reshaping all of humanity.
