Description
Hikozaemon Tokugawa is a senior officer in the United Nations Cosmo Navy who holds the rank of Lieutenant Commander and serves as the chief engineer of the space battleship Yamato. A veteran engineer at the age of sixty-two, he originates from Aichi Prefecture in Japan and is a seasoned officer with decades of experience. Before the war with the Garmillas Empire, he served as the chief engineer on the battleship Kirishima, which was the flagship of the First Fleet under the command of Captain Juzo Okita. This long period of service established a deep and lasting bond of trust between Tokugawa and Okita, making them not only professional colleagues but also old comrades and close friends.

In terms of personality, Tokugawa embodies the qualities of a seasoned and reliable veteran. He is calm, experienced, and deeply committed to his duty. Despite his age and the physical demands of his post, he carries the weight of his responsibilities with a steady demeanor. His appearance is marked by a slightly stout build, white hair, and white eyebrows, reflecting his years of service. While he is a strict professional when on duty, he also has a personal side, as he is extremely fond of his granddaughter, Aiko, and is concerned for the well-being of his family back on Earth, who struggle to find food on the war-torn planet.

Tokugawa's primary motivation for joining the Yamato's mission is a sense of duty and loyalty. He had originally been scheduled to retire from the military two months after the Yamato's launch date, but he accepted Captain Okita's personal request to postpone his retirement and take on the vital role of chief engineer for the perilous voyage to Iscandar. He shares Okita's resolve to see the mission through, partly as a form of recompense for the younger lives lost under their command during earlier conflicts. His personal concerns for his family's survival on Earth also drive him to ensure the success of the mission, which holds the key to Earth's restoration.

As the chief of the engineering section, Tokugawa holds one of the most critical positions aboard the Yamato. His role encompasses the overall command of the engineering division, where he oversees the operation, maintenance, and damage control of the ship's complex systems, most notably the powerful wave motion engine. He leads a team of engineers, including his assistant, Susumu Yamazaki, with whom he shares a sincere bond of trust, and Sukeharu Yabu. Tokugawa has a mentorship relationship with Yabu, having served with him on the Kirishima, and Yabu regards him as his teacher. During combat situations, Tokugawa is responsible for managing damage control operations, though he often delegates the direct leadership of the damage control teams to Yamazaki so he can focus on the broader technical oversight of the ship. His notable abilities lie in his vast technical expertise, his calm decision-making under pressure, and his extensive experience, all of which are essential for maintaining the functionality of the Yamato during its long and dangerous journey.

A key relationship in his life is with his family, particularly his granddaughter Aiko. He also shares a profound mutual respect with Captain Okita; the two are seen sharing drinks and reminiscing about their younger days before significant moments in the voyage, highlighting their deep understanding of one another. Tokugawa also has a close working relationship with his subordinates, acting as a mentor and a steady, commanding presence in the engine room. Throughout the events of the 2199 mission to Iscandar, Tokugawa demonstrates unwavering professionalism and dedication, ensuring that the heart of the Yamato continues to function despite the immense challenges it faces.
