Makoto Hyuuga is a First Lieutenant at NERV and one of the three primary computer technicians stationed in the command post of Central Dogma, alongside Maya Ibuki and Shigeru Aoba. He serves in the Tactical Operations division and acts as the chief aide to its head, Misato Katsuragi. Hyuuga is a highly skilled technician who operates the MAGI computer system during Angel attacks, monitoring tactical data and coordinating Evangelion launch sequences. Despite his nerdy demeanor—he often reads manga comics during breaks—he is a diligent and resourceful worker. He demonstrates quick thinking and bravery on multiple occasions, such as piloting a plane to transport Evangelion Unit-01 during the Jet Alone incident and commandeering a loudspeaker truck to warn NERV headquarters of the approaching Angel Matarael during a citywide power failure. Hyuuga is deeply loyal to Misato and harbors an unspoken romantic crush on her, though he never acts on his feelings or interferes with her relationship with Ryoji Kaji. He supports Misato's investigations into NERV's hidden agenda by relaying intelligence from a trusted source in Shanghai about the Mass Production Evangelions, hacking into the Intelligence Department's records after the arrival of the Fifth Children, and borrowing classified information about Kaworu Nagisa from Ibuki. During the JSSDF invasion of NERV headquarters, Misato entrusts him with command of the operations center while she leaves to rescue Shinji Ikari. Hyuuga also performs smaller personal favors for her, such as picking up her laundry, though he teasingly calls her lazy. His attraction to Misato is symbolically acknowledged during the events of The End of Evangelion, when a manifestation of Lilith takes Misato's form and kisses him just before he dissolves into LCL. Over the course of the series, Hyuuga develops from a background technician into a more proactive and morally engaged figure, willing to defy authority and risk his safety to uncover the truth. In the Rebuild of Evangelion films, he appears in a similar capacity, later serving on the bridge of the AAA Wunder. His abilities are grounded in technical expertise, problem-solving under pressure, and a quiet competence that makes him a reliable member of NERV's bridge crew.
