Description
Maria Tachibana is a central figure in the Sakura Wars series, serving as the original captain and later the second-in-command of the Imperial Combat Revue's Flower Division. She is of mixed Russian and Japanese descent, born on June 19, 1903, in Kiev, Ukraine. Her early life was marked by the violence of the Russian Revolution, where she fought and earned the nickname Kazuar, meaning cassowary, due to her fierce and relentless combat style. The trauma of war left her emotionally guarded, and after leaving Russia she briefly fell in with the New York mafia before being recruited by Major Ayame Fujieda to join the Flower Division in Japan.
Maria's personality is initially cold, logical, and reserved, a direct result of her harrowing past. She keeps others at arm's length and struggles to connect emotionally, which makes her appear distant and unapproachable. However, she is deeply principled and motivated by a sense of duty to protect her comrades and the city. Her role in the story begins as the leader of the Flower Division, but she quickly recognizes that her strengths lie in strategy and tactical support rather than uniting a fractious team. She willingly steps down as captain when Ichiro Ogami arrives, becoming his loyal vice-captain and trusted advisor. This decision marks a crucial turning point: Maria's initial resentment toward Ogami fades as he proves his bravery and selflessness, and she gradually opens up to him and the other members. Her key relationships include a mentor-like bond with the younger Sakura Shinguji, who looks up to her, and a growing trust and affection for Ogami. Over the course of the series, Maria's character development centers on overcoming her post-traumatic stress and learning to embrace emotional bonds, transforming from a stoic survivor into a warm, caring teammate willing to lay down her life for the group.
Maria's notable abilities include exceptional marksmanship with her signature Enfield Mark I revolver and a sharp tactical mind honed by real warfare. She is a skilled pilot of a dark purple Koubu mecha, which is armed with a machine cannon and a back-mounted sniper cannon, and she can unleash an ice-based special attack. On stage, she performs as a talented actress, often cast in male roles due to her androgynous and commanding presence. Her calm demeanor and natural authority make her an indispensable asset both in combat and in the leadership of the Flower Division.
