TV-Series
Description
Li Kohran from Sakura Wars is a member of the Imperial Combat Revue's Flower Division, serving as a combat pilot, the unit's chief mechanic, and its primary engineer. She is a young woman of Chinese descent who was born on March 3, 1906. Her most defining trait is her cheerful, good-humored personality; she is often described as the mood-maker of the group and frequently takes the lead in the Flower Division's comedic stage productions. At the same time, she possesses a genuine, vibrant sense of fun that makes her approachable and well-liked by her comrades.
Kohran's primary motivation is her passion for mechanics and invention. She is a self-taught genius who loves working on the Koubu, the Flower Division's steam-powered mecha, and she handles nearly all maintenance and repair duties single-handedly with the aid of her small robot assistants. Her inventive spirit often leads to a running gag: many of her creations are accident-prone and tend to backfire or explode, sometimes when she uses the commander Ichiro Ogami as an unwitting test subject. Despite these comedic mishaps, her technical skill is genuine, and she is considered irreplaceable to the division's operations.
Beneath her upbeat exterior, Kohran carries a traumatic past. A bandit raid killed her parents, and she was the only survivor. This event left her with a deep-seated fear of fire, which surfaces in crisis situations. In the second installment of the series, her backstory is explored more thoroughly: she recounts how the fire from that raid paralyzed her with panic, and she was helped by General Yoneda, who played a key role in bringing her to the Flower Division. She later travels to Kobe, her former home, to retrieve a family keepsake and strengthen her resolve. Her development arc involves confronting these anxieties and learning to accept herself, particularly her insecurities about her appearance compared to the other members of the Flower Division.
In the story, Kohran occupies the dual role of engineer and stage manager. Off the battlefield, she is responsible for the technical aspects of the Flower Division's theater performances. On the battlefield, she pilots her own Koubu, using her mechanical knowledge to maximize its performance during combat. She is one of the main player-controlled characters and a potential romantic partner for Ichiro Ogami, with whom she shares a close, teasing friendship. Her relationships with other Flower Division members are friendly and supportive; she often plays the role of the group's comic relief but is respected for her competence and dedication.
Kohran's notable abilities include her mechanical genius, her skill as a Koubu pilot, and her resourcefulness in creating gadgets. She is also an accomplished stage manager, handling the often-chaotic backstage operations of the Imperial Theater. Her character is defined by the contrast between her lighthearted, inventive nature and the serious trauma she has overcome, making her a well-rounded and beloved member of the Imperial Combat Revue.
