TV-Series
Description
Ichiro Ogami is the central protagonist of the Sakura Wars anime and of the original Sakura Wars game series through its fourth installment. Born on January 3, 1903, he is a young naval officer who graduates at the top of his class from the Imperial Naval Academy. His outstanding record and demonstrated skill in piloting the Koubu, a steam-powered spiritual combat armor, draw the attention of Lieutenant General Ikki Yoneda, who selects him to become captain of the Hanagumi, the Flower Division of the Imperial Combat Revue.
Ogami's appointment is unusual because he is male. Spiritual power strong enough to operate spiritual armor is rare among men, and Ogami possesses both that power and a natural ability to act as a catalyst who harmonizes the spiritual energies of those around him. These qualities make him uniquely suited to lead a team of female operatives who also work as stage actresses. In public, he serves as a ticket clipper at the Grand Imperial Theater and occasionally assists with stage production, while his true duties involve commanding combat operations to protect the Imperial Capital from supernatural threats.
In personality, Ogami is earnest, serious, honest, and deeply sincere. He carries himself with the discipline and formality of a naval officer, yet he is unfailingly patient and kind when dealing with others. He has a strong sense of justice and a hardworking nature, approaching every task with the stated resolve to do his utmost. Although he is an elite graduate, he is not arrogant, and he often shows modesty and genuine concern for the wellbeing of his subordinates. His sincerity is what allows him to gain the trust of a group of strong-willed and highly individual teammates.
His primary motivation is the protection of the Imperial Capital and its people from demons and hostile organizations. As captain, he feels a deep responsibility to safeguard his squad members and to honor the trust placed in him by his superiors. He takes his dual identity seriously, believing that both the combat mission and the theatrical performances of the Flower Division are worthy of his full dedication.
Within the story, Ogami serves as the field commander of the Flower Division, leading battles from the front lines while coordinating the team's movements. He is the figure who unites the diverse members of the squad and enables them to function effectively both as a fighting unit and as a theater troupe. His personal decisions often shape the course of the narrative, and his growth into a dependable leader is a central thread of the series.
His key relationships are defined by mutual respect and trust. He works most closely with Sakura Shinguji, a bright and straightforward swordswoman who joins the division at the same time he assumes command; the two become close partners in battle. He also succeeds Maria Tachibana, the division's first captain, a composed and highly capable senior member whose example sets a high standard for leadership. With the proud top star Sumire Kanzaki, he initially faces suspicion and clashes of personality, but he eventually earns her respect through his sincerity. He maintains warm bonds with the younger members, including the gifted child Iris, and relies on the technical expertise of the self-styled genius inventor Li Kohran, as well as on the spirited support of the martial artist Kanna Kirishima. Throughout his service, he remains under the watchful guidance of Lieutenant General Yoneda, whom he eventually succeeds.
Across the series, Ogami develops from a promising but untested young officer into a seasoned and respected commander. He is promoted through the ranks, later transfers to lead the Paris Flower Division, and ultimately, upon Yoneda's retirement, assumes the positions of commander-in-chief of the Imperial Combat Revue and manager of the Grand Imperial Theater.
In terms of abilities, Ogami is a highly capable fighter. He is a practitioner of the Niten Ichi-ryu school of swordsmanship, fighting with two blades, and he is also an expert marksman with firearms. His rare spiritual power allows him to pilot spiritual armor effectively, and his catalyst ability enables him to synchronize and amplify the spiritual power of his squad members, making him both a frontline warrior and a force multiplier for the entire team. His strategic mind, honed through top-tier naval training, further cements his role as the heart of the Flower Division.
