Description
Dianna Soriel is the hereditary queen of the Moonrace, the civilization of humans who have lived on the Moon for centuries following the destruction of Earth's past conflicts, known as the Dark History. As the sovereign ruler, she is the ultimate authority for her people, a position inherited from her family. The Soriel family gained prominence through scientific achievements, specifically by successfully developing plants capable of growing in space environments at the asteroid colony Mistletoe. To manage the long passage of time and await the Earth's environmental recovery, the Moonrace developed cryogenic sleep technology, which Dianna has used repeatedly. Consequently, her true age is unknown, though she maintains the youthful appearance of a woman around nineteen years old.
Dianna is portrayed as thoughtful, wise, and commanding, yet she also possesses a gentle and personable nature that can sometimes reveal a degree of naivety about the world. Her decision to finally lead her people back to Earth is driven by a deep weariness with her unchanging, extended life on the Moon and a genuine desire to experience a natural lifespan on the planet's surface. A strong sense of responsibility defines her actions as a leader, and she consistently strives for peaceful resolutions to the conflicts her return initiates. However, she is not a flawless ruler; her initial plans did not fully account for the resistance from the Earth's inhabitants or the ambitions of her own subjects who would seek to betray her.
The central narrative device of Dianna's character is her chance encounter with Kihel Heim, a young woman from Earth who is her exact double. After a spontaneous decision to exchange clothes, the two find their roles completely reversed, leading to a prolonged and impactful identity swap. While Kihel assumes the duties of the queen aboard the flagship Soleil, Dianna lives as Kihel, experiencing the simple, grounded life she had longed for. In this role, she befriends Loran Cehack, the series protagonist, and comes to understand the Earthlings' perspective from a position far removed from her royal status. This experience deepens her empathy and allows her to speak from the heart in ways her formal position might have prevented.
Dianna's key relationships are profoundly shaped by this switch. Her bond with Kihel Heim becomes a unique one of mutual trust and shared identity, with each woman understanding the burdens of the other's life. The series concludes with the two permanently exchanging places. Her relationship with Loran Cehack evolves significantly. Initially, she is an object of his near-worshipful admiration. As she lives in the guise of Kihel, a more personal and caring dynamic develops between them, eventually leading to Loran becoming her most trusted confidant and protector. In the end, Loran chooses to leave behind other attachments to accompany Dianna to a small, peaceful cabin on Earth, where he watches over her. This final period of her life is tinged with melancholy; the long periods of cryosleep have weakened her constitution, and her use of a walking stick hints at her declining health. Another crucial figure is her loyal亲卫队长, Harry Ord, who is blindly devoted to her well-being and is one of the few who sees through the impersonation. A notable part of her personal history is a past romance with the first Will Game, an Earthling she met during a previous descent a century earlier. This story was later passed down on Earth as the fairy tale "The Celestial Ship Gendarme".
Throughout the story, Dianna's motivations shift from orchestrating a large-scale repatriation to correcting the mistakes that arose from her initial haste and to preventing the Dark History from repeating itself. Her development is marked by a growing resolve to take responsibility for her actions, culminating in her decision to return to the Moon to face the political betrayals and military coups that occurred in her absence. Despite her peaceful ideals, she possesses considerable knowledge of military affairs, is familiar with mobile suit and battleship capabilities, and is capable of piloting a shuttle if necessary. Her notable ability is not a physical power but her resilience and wisdom as a ruler who has lived for centuries, navigating complex political schemes while maintaining her fundamental compassion and desire for a peaceful coexistence between the Earth and the Moon.
