Description
Molly Osaka, known in the original Japanese version as Naru Osaka, is a recurring character in the anime Sailor Moon. She is a student at Crossroads Junior High and the childhood best friend of the protagonist, Serena Tsukino. Molly lives with her mother, Susan Baker, above the family-run OSA-P Jewellery Shop. She is characterized as a kind, compassionate, and supportive friend, though she is also honest and willing to gently remind Serena about her responsibilities, such as studying. Molly is portrayed as a typical teenage girl who values her friendships and family, and she often finds herself caught up in the supernatural events that surround Serena’s secret life as Sailor Moon.

Her role in the story is primarily that of a close confidante and a link to Serena’s ordinary life. In the early part of the series, Molly is frequently targeted by the monsters of the Dark Kingdom, often because of her connection to the jewelry store or her emotional energy. She hero-worships Sailor Moon, not realizing that the hero is her own best friend. Molly’s most significant storyline involves a romantic relationship with Nephrite, one of the Dark Kingdom’s generals. Under the disguise of a man named Masoto Sanjouin, Nephrite initially manipulates Molly to harvest her life energy, but he eventually develops genuine feelings for her. Molly falls deeply in love with him, and when Nephrite sacrifices himself to save her from Zoisite, she is left heartbroken. This loss profoundly affects her, causing her to miss school and withdraw, until Serena helps her begin to heal.

After the Nephrite arc, Molly’s role decreases, and she becomes a background character. She later enters a relationship with their classmate Melvin Butler, a bespectacled and earnest boy who has long harbored a crush on her. The two remain a couple through subsequent seasons. Molly does not possess any supernatural abilities; she is an ordinary human. Her motivations are rooted in loyalty, love, and the desire for a peaceful, happy life. She is defined by her unwavering friendship with Serena and her capacity for deep emotional attachment. Her development is subtle but meaningful: she matures from a carefree schoolgirl into someone who has experienced love and loss, yet she remains resilient and open to new connections. While she never discovers Serena’s identity as Sailor Moon, there are hints that she may have come to suspect it. Overall, Molly Osaka represents the normal, human side of the Sailor Moon world, grounding the story with her warmth and relatability.
