Description
Daniel, more commonly known as Jadeite, is the first of the four generals of the Dark Kingdom to appear in Sailor Moon. He is a young man with short blonde hair and deep blue eyes, typically dressed in a high-collared military uniform in shades of light purple and violet with red trim. A master of disguise, he often assumes various human identities and professions to carry out his missions, such as a radio disc jockey, a fitness instructor, or a shrine assistant.

Jadeite's primary role is to gather human life energy to help revive Queen Metaria, the entity that serves as the power source for the Dark Kingdom. His methods usually involve mass-market schemes, tricking large groups of people into using energy-draining objects like jewelry, computer disks, or relaxation pods. Unlike some of the other generals who target specific individuals, Jadeite prefers to extract energy from crowds. He is characterized by a confident and sarcastic demeanor. A notable aspect of his personality, particularly in the original Japanese version of the 1990s anime, is his strong misogyny; he openly views women as inferior and believes they cannot match his power or strategies, a trait that fuels his rivalry with the female Sailor Guardians. In some international dubs, this characteristic was significantly toned down.

Jadeite is deeply loyal to his sovereign, Queen Beryl, and is often shown as subservient, bowing or kneeling before her more than the other generals. His motivation is largely driven by a desire to please his queen and prove his worth. However, he suffers a series of defeats at the hands of the Sailor Guardians, who consistently thwart his energy-collection schemes. After each failure, he is summoned before Queen Beryl to face her growing displeasure. His final mission is an ultimatum: destroy the Sailor Guardians or face the "Eternal Sleep," a punishment worse than death. He lures Sailor Moon, Sailor Mercury, and Sailor Mars to an airport for a desperate final battle, where he demonstrates significant telekinetic power, even controlling jumbo jets. Although he manages to learn the Sailor Guardians' true civilian identities, he is defeated. When he returns to the Dark Kingdom to report his discovery, an enraged Queen Beryl refuses to listen and condemns him to be frozen within an ice crystal, sentencing him to the Eternal Sleep.

In the original manga and the Sailor Moon Crystal reboot, Jadeite's character has a more elaborate backstory. He is re-imagined as one of the Four Heavenly Kings, or Shitennou, who in a past life served as the personal guardians of Prince Endymion, Mamoru's previous incarnation. In these versions, he and the other generals were brainwashed by Queen Beryl. A subtle connection to Sailor Mars is also suggested; while primarily an enemy in the present timeline, artwork and supplementary materials hint at a past bond between them as fellow guardians of the Moon and Earth kingdoms. In the Sailor Moon Crystal continuity, this connection is more explicit, and before his physical death, Jadeite briefly breaks free from Mind Control to remember his true duty as a protector of Endymion. Despite these differences between adaptations, his role consistently introduces the threat of the Dark Kingdom and sets the stage for the conflicts to come.
