Description
Marzio, also known by his alter ego Milord and his past identity as Prince Endimion, is one of the primary protagonists of the Sailor Moon franchise. He is the civilian identity and secret alias of the mysterious masked figure who aids the Sailor Guardians, and his story is deeply interwoven with the reincarnation and destiny theme central to the series.
In his civilian life, Marzio is a student who lost his parents in a car accident on his sixth birthday, an event that also triggered fragmented memories of his previous existence. He lives alone and is often perceived as a serious, somewhat aloof individual with a calm and collected demeanor. This quiet exterior hides a deep loneliness and a search for meaning, as he is haunted by dreams of a mysterious princess and a past he cannot fully recall. He is intelligent and protective, though his early interactions with the protagonist are marked by teasing and a competitive, sarcastic edge that slowly gives way to genuine affection.
When Sailor Moon and her allies are in danger, Marzio unconsciously transforms into the masked vigilante Milord. Dressed in a tuxedo and cape, he uses throwing roses as weapons and possesses considerable physical agility and combat skill. His role in the story is that of a protector and a guide; he often appears at critical moments to provide counsel, distract enemies, or rescue Sailor Moon from peril. At the start of the series, his motivations are tied to recovering his lost memories and locating the Legendary Silver Crystal, which he believes holds the key to his past. Over time, his purpose becomes aligned with protecting the Sailor Guardians and the Earth.
His key relationship is with Sailor Moon, which unfolds across multiple lifetimes. In the age of the Silver Millennium, he was Prince Endimion, the prince of Earth, who fell in forbidden love with Princess Serenity of the Moon. Their tragic deaths in that era led to their reincarnation in the modern world. This bond is central to the series: their love is a constant force that transcends death and allows them to overcome many trials, including temporary separations, brainwashing, and personal doubts. He also develops a deep bond with Chibiusa, the daughter from his future with Sailor Moon, and shares a loyal but sometimes strained connection with the other Sailor Guardians.
His development follows a path from a solitary, amnesiac figure into a selfless heroic partner. Early in the story, he struggles with his dual identity and his role, questioning whether he is truly a hero or an obstacle. As he recovers his past memories and accepts his destiny, he becomes more confident and steadfast. In later story arcs, he takes on an even greater responsibility as the guardian of Earth, wielding his own sailor crystal and psychic abilities.
Notable abilities include a strong psychic sensitivity that allows him to sense danger to Sailor Moon, as well as psychometry and healing powers. As Milord, he uses roses charged with energy as his primary projectile weapon. In his true form as Prince Endimion, he can wield a sword and command the forces of the Earth. His power evolves throughout the series, culminating in the awakening of the Golden Crystal, which grants him abilities comparable to the Sailor Guardians and allows him to combine his energy with Sailor Moon to perform powerful attacks.
