Makoto Kino, also referred to as Morea in some international versions, is the civilian identity of Sailor Jupiter, the third Sailor Guardian to be discovered in the Sailor Moon series. She is introduced as a transfer student at Azabu Jūban Junior High, where her unusual height, long skirt, and curly hair lead others to mistakenly assume she is a delinquent. In reality, she is a gentle and caring person. Her parents died in an aviation accident when she was young, forcing her to become self-sufficient and live alone. This loss also makes her flinch whenever an airplane passes overhead.

Her personality is defined by a striking duality. She is physically the strongest of the Inner Guardians, capable of lifting a full-grown man with ease and proficient in martial arts. Yet she embraces traditionally domestic interests such as cooking, baking, gardening, and flower arranging, and her long‑held dream is to marry and own a cake and flower shop. She is known for being boy‑crazy, frequently falling for any young man who reminds her of an older boy she once admired (her senpai). Despite her tough appearance, she is deeply kind, loyal, and protective, often acting as a big sister to the group.

Her primary motivation is to protect her friends and the world from evil, and to overcome the loneliness she has felt since losing her parents. As Sailor Jupiter, she serves as the team’s physical powerhouse, often taking point in direct combat. She is also described as a coordinator among the Guardians, balancing her raw strength with a nurturing disposition.

In the overall story, Makoto is the third Guardian to join Usagi Tsukino (Sailor Moon). She quickly becomes a close friend and ally, and her self‑sacrifice in one early battle—where she unleashes a point‑blank Supreme Thunder to defeat multiple enemies—demonstrates her willingness to give everything for others. Over the course of the series, her abilities evolve through multiple forms, including Super Sailor Jupiter and Eternal Sailor Jupiter.

Her key relationships include a strong bond with Usagi, who was the first to see past her intimidating exterior; a supportive friendship with Ami Mizuno (Sailor Mercury); and a playful camaraderie with Minako Aino (Sailor Venus), with whom she shares an interest in romance and fashion. She also develops a romantic connection with Motoki Furuhata, especially in the live‑action adaptation, where they eventually become engaged.

As Sailor Jupiter, her notable abilities include immense superhuman strength, electrokinesis (Supreme Thunder and subsequent lightning‑based attacks), and power over plants (such as the Jupiter Oak Evolution). She also uses martial arts and is a skilled ice skater and dancer. Her sailor uniform is green and pink, and she consistently wears rose‑shaped earrings even in civilian form.

Throughout the series, Makoto’s character development is most visible in her growing confidence and her ability to balance her masculine and feminine traits without feeling the need to hide either side. While some later seasons give her less individual focus, she remains a steadfast and beloved member of the Sailor Guardians.
