Description
Marine is a key character introduced in the anime Saber Marionette J Again. She is a prototype marionette originally designated NSM-X1, developed in New Texas as an experimental model designed to harness and withstand plasma energy. She first appears as a nameless rogue marionette operating as a thief known locally as the Whirlwind Bandit, stealing items around the city of Japoness. After a brief confrontation with Lime, one of the main marionettes, she is shown kindness and compassion, which causes her to change her behavior and become remorseful. She is then taken in by Otaru Mamiya and his group, who give her the name Marine.

Marine's personality initially comes across as innocent and naive, lacking the life experience and emotional complexity of the other marionettes. She is pure-hearted and unburdened by past conflicts, but she also struggles with unfamiliar emotions. After joining the household, she develops androphobia, a sudden fear of men, which is later explained by the character Lorelei as a symptom of puberty brought on by her accelerated development. As she grows emotionally, she becomes more attached to her new friends and begins to understand concepts like love, sacrifice, and belonging.

Her motivations are tied to her desire to find a purpose and to be accepted. She is deeply loyal to those who show her kindness, particularly Lime and Otaru. When she learns that her unique design is both a weapon and a ticking clock, she willingly accepts her fate and is prepared to give her life to save the planet from a catastrophic plasma storm. Her primary role in the story is that of a catalyst and a focal point: her arrival disrupts the peaceful daily life of the main characters and introduces a serious threat that forces everyone to confront deeper questions about life and death.

Marine's key relationships include her bond with Lime, who becomes her closest friend and protector, and with Otaru, whose courageous actions help her overcome her fear of men. She also interacts with the other marionettes—Cherry, Bloodberry, and the Saber Dolls—though her development is most strongly tied to Lime. Over the course of the series, Marine transforms from a lonely, confused rogue into a brave, selfless individual who chooses to sacrifice herself for the sake of others.

Her notable abilities stem from her triple maiden circuit, a technology that grants her enhanced emotional capacity and extraordinary physical power. She can generate and control plasma, manifesting it as destructive energy storms. She also demonstrates remarkable multitasking skills and physical strength. However, these abilities come at a cost: as she matures, the strain on her body becomes overwhelming, and using her full power risks overheating and self-destruction. Her rapid emotional and physical growth is both her greatest strength and her most tragic limitation.
