OVA
Description
NSM-X, later named Marine, is a prototypical saber marionette introduced in the OVA series Saber Marionette J Again. Her model number, NSM-X1, identifies her as a prototype developed by the nation of New Texas. She first appears as a stealthy kleptomaniac known locally as the Whirlwind Bandit, committing a string of thefts around the Japoness area. After a brief confrontation with the marionette Lime, Lime's kindness prompts a dramatic personality shift, and Marine becomes friendly and remorseful. She returns the stolen property and is welcomed into the group, who unanimously give her the name Marine.

Marine's personality evolves significantly over the course of the story. Initially withdrawn and defensive, she becomes eager to please and highly diligent, demonstrating a proficient ability to multitask by handling chores such as chopping wood and setting up a restaurant. Her character development is marked by internal conflict as she acquires emotions through her unique design. She develops androphobia, a fear of men, which the scientist Lorelei diagnoses as an effect of puberty brought on by her emotional circuits. This condition causes her distress, but it also reflects her growing, unfamiliar feelings. Her motivation becomes deeply tied to her sense of purpose; she eavesdrops on a conversation revealing that she was built to withstand and weaponize plasma energy, and that her continued maturation will ultimately lead to her death. Rather than fear this fate, she accepts it and wishes to fulfill her existence by saving the planet from a catastrophic plasma storm, demonstrating a self-sacrificing nature.

Her role in the story is central to the OVA's main conflict. She is a seventh marionette whose mysterious power introduces a new dimension to the narrative. The arrival of Marine triggers a new crisis, as she is the key to either saving or dooming Terra II. Her existence forces the other characters, particularly Lime, to confront themes of friendship, sacrifice, and what it means to truly live. She serves as a catalyst for both action and emotional growth among the established cast.

Key relationships define her arc. Her bond with Otaru Mamiya is particularly important; after he courageously shields her from a lightning strike during her first uncontrolled plasma storm, she begins to appreciate and trust him. She also forms a strong friendship with Lime, who is the first to show her compassion and who later fights desperately to save her. Her presence creates a dynamic of rivalry and irritation with Lime, who feels overshadowed by Marine's competence, but this evolves into a deep mutual care. Marine also interacts with the other marionettes, including the reformed Saber Dolls Tiger, Luchs, and Panther, and she proves herself a capable ally in battle.

Marine's development is primarily about her journey from a confused, malfunctioning prototype to a being who willingly embraces her purpose. She matures faster than other marionettes, and her emotional awakening is accelerated by the discovery that she possesses three maiden circuits, the components that grant marionettes human-like emotions. This triple circuit makes her exceptionally powerful but also unstable. By the end of the series, she absorbs a massive amount of plasma energy to diffuse a planetary crisis, gravely damaging herself in the process. She is taken to the castle for recovery and repairs, with Lorelei promising to fix her. Her final scene involves Lime placing a conch shell by her ear, reaffirming their shared promise to visit the sea together, leaving her fate open but hopeful.

Notable abilities set Marine apart from other marionettes. She was engineered with a tolerance for plasma, allowing her to generate, control, and weaponize plasma energy. This power manifests as destructive plasma storms and the ability to incinerate enemies, as seen when she destroys a polymorphic cyborg. However, this power is a double-edged sword; her design flaws cause her abilities to overpower her systems, and using them leads to overheating and eventual death if she continues to mature. She also possesses enhanced strength, capable of physical feats that outmatch even the strongest standard marionettes, and demonstrates a high level of multitasking and skill in everyday tasks.
