Hanata Mitsurugi, often referred to as Hanagata, is an eighteen-year-old human clone residing in the city-state of Japoness on the planet Terra II. He is the eldest son of the wealthy and influential Hanagata Trust, a powerful financial organization with interests across the planet, yet he is considered an utter failure by his family due to his lack of practical skills and his troublesome, attention-seeking behavior. His background is rooted in the unusual history of Terra II, a world populated entirely by cloned males where androids called marionettes serve as substitutes for women.
Hanagata is best defined by his flamboyant and overdramatic personality. He acts out constantly, desperately seeking the spotlight and behaving like a spoiled, sheltered rich boy who believes everything should revolve around him and his desires. His most defining trait is a deep, genuine, and almost madly obsessive love for the series' central male protagonist, Otaru Mamiya.
