Description
Mirai Trunks, often referred to as Future Trunks, is the son of Vegeta and Bulma from an alternate timeline. He was born into a world already in ruins. In his timeline, Goku died from a heart virus, and soon after, the Androids 17 and 18 exterminated almost all of the Z Fighters, including Vegeta, Piccolo, and the others. The Dragon Balls became useless with Piccolo’s death, making all losses permanent. Trunks was raised in hiding by his mother Bulma and trained by the sole surviving warrior, Gohan, who became his mentor and older brother figure. Gohan taught him to fight, survive, and maintain hope in a hopeless world. When Gohan was killed by the Androids, Trunks’ grief and rage triggered his first transformation into a Super Saiyan. Despite this new power, he was still unable to defeat the Androids alone. Realizing he needed to change the past, he used the time machine Bulma had built to travel back in time to warn Goku and deliver medicine for the heart virus, hoping to prevent the apocalypse.

Personality-wise, Mirai Trunks is markedly different from his present-day child counterpart. Having grown up in a post-apocalyptic environment, he is mature, serious, and driven. He carries a heavy sense of responsibility and a deep understanding of loss. While he can be polite and respectful, especially toward his mother and Gohan, he is also fiercely determined and willing to make difficult sacrifices. His motivations are rooted in protecting the people he loves and restoring a future where humanity can live without fear. He does not seek glory or battle for its own sake; he fights because survival demands it.

In the story, Trunks serves as a catalyst for the Android and Cell arcs. His arrival introduces the concept of time travel and fundamentally alters the main timeline. He provides the Z Fighters with crucial advance warning and the medicine that saves Goku’s life. During the Cell Games, he fights alongside his father Vegeta, and later returns to his own timeline after Cell’s defeat, now powerful enough to destroy both Androids and an emerging Cell. In Dragon Ball Super, he returns again to seek help against Goku Black and Zamasu, gaining a unique transformation called Super Saiyan Rage. Although his original timeline is eventually erased by Zeno, he and Mai are granted refuge in a new timeline.

Key relationships include his mentor Gohan, whose death shaped him; his mother Bulma, the source of his technological and emotional support; and his father Vegeta, with whom he shares a complex bond of pride, respect, and eventual affection. Trunks also forms a romantic connection with Mai, who in his timeline becomes his close ally.

His notable abilities include the standard Saiyan traits of superhuman strength, speed, and flight, as well as ki sensing and energy attacks like the Burning Attack. He is a skilled swordsman, often wielding a longsword that he uses with precision. He can achieve multiple Super Saiyan grades, including a bulky power-focused form and later Super Saiyan 2 and the rage-boosted Super Saiyan Rage. Over the course of his journey, he learns to balance raw power with speed and tactics, developing from a desperate survivor into a seasoned warrior capable of facing god-level threats.
