Description
Android 18, known in the original Japanese as Jinzōningen Jūhachigō or Artificial Human Number 18, is a character from the Dragon Ball manga. She and her twin brother, Android 17, were originally human delinquents before being kidnapped and forcibly reconstructed into cyborgs by the scientist Dr. Gero, who sought to create the perfect weapons to kill the protagonist Goku. Despite being commonly called an android, Android 18 is more accurately a cyborg; she was built upon a human base with most of her anatomy enhanced by bio-organic components. Her only mechanical parts are a small perpetual energy reactor, which grants her inexhaustible stamina, and an emergency deactivation controller. Her real name, revealed years after her debut, is Lazuli.
Physically, Android 18 is depicted as a young woman of average height and build with blonde hair, blue eyes, and a calm, beautiful appearance. When she first appears, she wears a blue denim jacket and skirt adorned with the Red Ribbon Army logo, dark blue tights, and brown boots. Following the defeat of the villain Cell, her style softens to a more casual look, including a pale blue denim vest, white jeans, and flip-flops. Her personality is defined by a cool, confident, and often sarcastic demeanor. In her early appearances, she is arrogant and displays a detached, almost playful cruelty towards her opponents, showing little interest in Dr. Gero’s original vendetta and instead treating her search for Goku as a game. She is often annoyed by her brother's wild and reckless behavior, acting as the more level-headed, though still ruthless, of the two.
Android 18’s role in the story begins as a formidable antagonist during the Cell Saga. Her power is immense, easily surpassing that of a standard Super Saiyan, as demonstrated when she effortlessly breaks Vegeta's arm and defeats him in battle. She and Android 17 easily defeat the combined forces of the other Z-Fighters. However, her path begins to change when the bio-android Cell arrives, intent on absorbing her and her brother to achieve his "perfect" form. During this time, she shares a significant moment with the hero Krillin, who, despite her being an enemy, destroys a remote control that could have deactivated her, unable to bring himself to harm her. After Cell is defeated and she is freed from his body, this act of mercy lays the groundwork for a profound shift in her life.
Following the Cell Games, Android 18 undergoes a significant character transformation. She settles down, marries Krillin, and gives birth to a daughter named Marron. Her relationship with Krillin is notable within the series for being surprisingly normal and healthy. Unlike many other couples in the franchise, they communicate as equals, discuss major decisions, and support each other without one partner dominating the other. For example, Android 18 does not pressure Krillin to continue fighting when he feels surpassed by others, instead listening to his concerns and supporting his choices. Although her role in the subsequent Majin Buu Saga is reduced, she remains a capable fighter, participating in the World Martial Arts Tournament, where she secretly throws her match against the champion Mr. Satan in exchange for the prize money, and later fights against Majin Buu.
Her key relationships define much of her later story. Her bond with her twin brother, Android 17, is complex; they are partners in destruction initially, but later go their separate ways, though they reunite as allies in later series like Dragon Ball Super. Her marriage to Krillin is the cornerstone of her life after Cell, transforming her from a cold-hearted killer into a protective wife and mother. She exhibits a fierce, protective side towards her family, and her practical, materialistic side often surfaces, such as when she agrees to fight in a high-stakes tournament solely for the monetary reward. A darker version of the character exists in an alternate future timeline, where she and Android 17 are merciless killers who decimate the Earth's population and murder most of the heroes, including Krillin, highlighting how her development in the main timeline depended on specific events and relationships.
In terms of notable abilities, Android 18 possesses superhuman strength, speed, agility, and durability far beyond most of the series' fighters. Her most distinct asset is her unlimited energy reactor, which allows her to fight at maximum power indefinitely without tiring, a significant advantage over organic fighters who deplete their ki. She can fly using her ki and project powerful energy blasts. Her techniques include the Infinity Bullet, a rapid barrage of energy beams; a powerful Android Barrier that can deflect most attacks; and the Kienzan, a razor-sharp disc of energy that can cut through almost any material. She is also highly proficient in hand-to-hand combat, capable of executing complex combination attacks. While she does not train to achieve new transformations like the Saiyans, her baseline power from her cybernetic enhancements keeps her a relevant and formidable fighter throughout the series, including in Dragon Ball Super, where she participates in the Tournament of Power as a key member of Universe 7’s team.
