Description
Dr. Gero is a fictional character from the Dragon Ball Z anime, serving as a primary antagonist during the Android and Cell story arc. He was a brilliant but sinister scientist who rose to prominence as a key founding member and the de facto mastermind behind the Red Ribbon Army, an evil military organization seeking world domination. Gero was responsible for designing almost all of the Red Ribbon Army’s weaponry, as well as its early models of artificial humans, known as androids. His life's purpose changed dramatically when the young Son Goku single-handedly destroyed the Red Ribbon Army. Driven by a burning desire for revenge, Gero survived the army's downfall and went into hiding for many years in a secret mountain laboratory, dedicating his existence to creating the perfect warriors to assassinate Goku.

In terms of personality, Dr. Gero is depicted as cold, calculating, and utterly ruthless, with no regard for human life in pursuit of his goals. He is willing to kidnap innocent people, including siblings Lapis and Lazuli (who would become Androids 17 and 18), to use as unwilling test subjects for his horrific cybernetic experiments. Despite his evil nature, he was not entirely without a heart; he modeled Android 16 after his deceased son, a high-ranking Red Ribbon soldier who was killed by an enemy bullet. His affection for his lost child led him to make Android 16 exceptionally powerful but with a gentle, pacifistic personality, as he did not want this likeness of his son to be destroyed in battle. Gero also possesses an almost arrogant confidence in his own intellect and his creations, believing that his scientific genius has rendered him superior and his victory over Goku is assured.

Gero's ultimate motivation is purely personal vengeance against Goku for destroying the Red Ribbon Army. To achieve this, he became obsessed with studying his enemy. Using small, insect-like spy robots, he secretly monitored Goku and his allies for years, observing their battles and collecting combat data and cellular material. His role in the story is that of a hidden puppet master, whose actions inadvertently set the stage for a greater threat. After years of preparation, he emerged from hiding as Android 20, having converted his own aging body into a powerful cyborg by transplanting his brain into an artificial chassis that granted him immortality and enhanced strength. He initially appeared alongside his obedient creation, Android 19, believing they were strong enough to defeat Goku. However, this plan failed when the Saiyans proved to be far more powerful than his outdated data predicted. After his defeat, he was forced to retreat to his laboratory and activate the far more dangerous and rebellious Androids 17 and 18, who promptly betrayed and killed him.

Key relationships define his narrative. He is the creator of all the androids, viewing most as simple tools, but his relationship with his creations is one of fear and control, which ultimately leads to his demise at the hands of 17 and 18. His research also extended beyond his own death, as a supercomputer in his lab continued his work, using the collected cells of Earth's greatest warriors to complete his ultimate creation, the bio-android Cell. Gero's development in the series is primarily a descent from a master strategist to a desperate victim; he transitions from being the orchestrator of his revenge to a panicked fugitive, only to be destroyed by his own unruly experiments. In the non-canonical Dragon Ball GT, he returns as a villain from Hell, teaming up with Dr. Myuu to create a new, fused version of Android 17.

As a combatant designated Android 20, his notable abilities are unique. Unlike the infinite energy models he would later create, Gero was an energy absorption type. The palms of his hands contain devices that allow him to absorb the energy of his opponents, draining their life force and converting it into power for himself. He can also utilize the energy he absorbs to augment his physical strength and project energy blasts. Additionally, like many characters in the series, he can fly using the technique of bukujutsu, and his mechanical eyes are capable of firing a potent laser beam. A defining physical trait after his conversion is his exposed brain, visible beneath a transparent dome on his head, a stark visual representation of his transformation from human to machine.
