Description
Mr. Satan, also known as Hercule in some English versions, is a human character from the Dragon Ball Z anime. His real name is Mark, and he adopts the ring name Mr. Satan after the martial arts dojo where he trained, Satan Castle. He becomes a world-renowned martial arts champion and a public hero largely through a combination of skill, showmanship, and fortunate circumstances.
Mr. Satan first appears during the Cell Games, where he enters the tournament as a confident challenger. He attempts to fight the bio‑android Cell but is easily defeated in a single blow. Despite this, the media and public give him credit for Cell's eventual defeat, elevating him to the status of Earth's greatest protector. Initially, Mr. Satan is portrayed as boastful, egocentric, and eager to take credit for feats he did not accomplish. He parades his wealth and fame, and much of his early behavior is driven by a desire for public adoration and material reward.
Beneath this flamboyant exterior, however, Mr. Satan possesses a genuine, if often hidden, sense of decency. He deeply loves his daughter Videl and ultimately supports her relationship with Gohan, whom he later accepts as a son-in-law. This family bond becomes one of the more grounded aspects of his character. As the story progresses, his ego gradually softens, especially after he encounters Majin Buu. Instead of trying to fight Buu, Mr. Satan approaches him with a conversation, treating the creature as a person rather than a monster. This unlikely friendship leads to Buu expelling his evil side and becoming a benevolent companion. Mr. Satan's influence helps turn Buu into a force for good, and the two become inseparable friends, with Mr. Satan acting as a caretaker for the childlike Majin.
His most pivotal role in the story occurs during the final battle against Kid Buu. When Goku prepares a Spirit Bomb to defeat the villain, the people of Earth are initially reluctant to lend their energy. Mr. Satan uses his immense popularity and trust among the public to rally humanity, convincing billions to contribute their power. This act directly enables Goku to destroy Kid Buu, making Mr. Satan an indispensable part of Earth's salvation. Afterward, he once again accepts public credit for the victory, though the Z‑fighters willingly allow this to protect their privacy.
In terms of abilities, Mr. Satan is a highly skilled martial artist by ordinary human standards. He can break stacks of tiles, deliver powerful punches and kicks, and has won multiple World Martial Arts Tournaments after the Z‑fighters stopped competing. His signature techniques include the Dynamite Kick, the Megaton Punch, and the Satan Punch. However, he possesses no supernatural ki abilities such as flight, energy blasts, or superhuman speed. When measured against the god‑like combatants of the series, he is completely outmatched, but his courage and resourcefulness prove valuable in non‑combat situations.
Mr. Satan undergoes a clear character development over the course of Dragon Ball Z. He begins as a self‑serving fraud who uses deception to maintain his heroic image. Through his friendship with Majin Buu and his experiences during the Buu saga, he becomes a genuinely compassionate figure who puts others before himself. He continues to appear as a supporting character in later installments, serving as a comedic yet heartfelt presence.
His key relationships include his daughter Videl, his son‑in‑law Gohan, his granddaughter Pan, and his close friend Mr. Buu. He also maintains a cordial but distant connection with Goku and the other Z‑fighters, who tolerate his boasts for the sake of keeping Earth's peace.
Mr. Satan's motivations evolve from a craving for fame and wealth to a more selfless drive to protect his family and friends. He remains a fundamentally human character in a world of super‑saiyans and gods, representing how ordinary people can still make a difference through charisma, persistence, and genuine kindness.
