Description
Chaoz is a recurring character in the Dragon Ball series, recognized by his diminutive stature, white skin, and distinctive red dots on his cheeks. His appearance, which never seems to age, is completed by a small black cap worn over a head that bears a single, thin strand of hair and lacks a visible nose. His name is derived from the Japanese word for dumplings (gyoza), reflecting a naming convention common among martial arts students in the series.
Chaoz is first introduced as a student of the Crane School, under the tutelage of the assassin Master Shen (also known as the Crane Hermit). Alongside his martial arts brother, the formidable three-eyed fighter Tien Shinhan, Chaoz enters the 22nd World Martial Arts Tournament with the goal of defeating the rival Turtle School. In this tournament, he uses his psychic abilities to great effect against Krillin, paralyzing him and attacking his internal organs. However, despite his powers, Chaoz has a significant weakness in his childlike naivety and an inability to perform even basic arithmetic without using his fingers for counting. Krillin exploits this by asking him a math problem, breaking his concentration and allowing Krillin to ultimately win the match by ring-out.
During the tournament final between Tien and Goku, Chaoz is ordered by Master Shen to use his abilities to paralyze Goku and ensure Tien's victory. Although he complies at first, he stops when Tien, who wants to win honorably, confronts him. When Master Shen threatens to kill Chaoz for his defiance, Chaoz remains loyal to his friend. Following the intervention of Master Roshi, Chaoz, along with Tien, abandons the Crane School and its murderous ways, becoming an ally of Goku and the other Z-Fighters.
Chaoz's motivations are deeply rooted in his unwavering loyalty to Tien Shinhan. He follows Tien almost everywhere, acting as a devoted companion and training partner. This relationship is the most significant in his life; he rarely makes a decision without considering Tien, and his primary role in the stories often involves supporting his best friend, whether by fixing tournament match brackets with telekinesis or joining him in his solitary training in the wilderness. Beyond this, Chaoz is motivated by a sense of bravery and selflessness that belies his small size. Despite being consistently outmatched by the escalating threats to Earth, he never hesitates to put himself in harm's way to help his friends. A clear example of this is when he attempts to use a telekinetic attack to stop the Demon King Piccolo from making a wish on the Dragon Balls, leading to his own death. He is later revived.
During the Saiyan Saga in Dragon Ball Z, Chaoz has one of his most notable moments. After a year of intense training for the arrival of the Saiyans Vegeta and Nappa, Chaoz's power level is measured at 610, making him one of the weaker warriors. When the battle turns dire and Nappa severely injures Tien, Chaoz, in a desperate and courageous act, uses a technique he copied from the Saibamen. He flies onto Nappa's back and self-destructs, hoping to kill the Saiyan and save his friend. The explosion, however, proves ineffective against Nappa's superior power, and Chaoz dies once more. He is later resurrected along with the other fallen warriors using the Namekian Dragon Balls.
Following his second revival, Chaoz recedes from the front lines of combat. While he continues to train with Tien, the rapid power escalation of enemies like the Androids, Cell, and Majin Buu leaves him unable to contribute meaningfully as a fighter. Despite this, he remains a part of the Z-Fighter community, often seen at Kame House or training in remote locations with Tien. His role transitions from combatant to a supporting figure, yet his bravery endures; he survives Majin Buu's attack that wipes out most of humanity and is present for the final battle against Kid Buu, contributing his energy to the Spirit Bomb.
Chaoz possesses a variety of abilities. He is a skilled martial artist of the Crane School, capable of using powerful energy waves like the Dodon Ray. His most distinctive skills, however, are his psychic powers. He can use telekinesis to move objects, paralyze opponents, and even attack their internal organs directly. He is also a capable telepath, able to communicate with others mentally and sense the energy of distant individuals. Despite his courage and unique abilities, Chaoz's overall combat power does not grow at the same rate as the other main characters, defining his role as a brave but secondary protector who is always willing to sacrifice everything for his friends, especially Tien Shinhan.
