Description
Mikiya Kokutō is a high school student in March 1995 when he first meets Shiki Ryougi on a snowy night. They become classmates, where his academic performance is exceptionally average. His family consists of his parents and younger sister, Azaka Kokutō, who was adopted by their uncle after requesting separation during childhood. Mikiya maintains a close relationship with his uncle, Daisuke Akimi, a detective closer in age to a cousin or brother. Daisuke frequently consults Mikiya on cases, valuing his investigative abilities.

Physically plain-looking but cute, Mikiya typically wears black clothing and distinctive black-rimmed glasses. This appearance remains consistent through his late teens, though he later sustains permanent injuries: loss of vision in his left eye and mobility in one leg after an attack by Lio Shirazumi.

His personality is defined by his Origin – "one that will never hurt others, more so than anyone else" – compelling him towards normalcy. He is gentle, sincere, perceptive, and compassionate, naturally attracting trust from people and animals. Despite lacking supernatural abilities, his deductive skills and diligence make him an exceptional investigator. He exhibits emotional restraint, rarely crying; the sole instance occurs when he vows to bear Shiki's sin after she kills Lio Shirazumi, shedding a "bloody tear" from his injured eye. This reflects his belief that crying signifies making someone "special," a deviation from his normalcy.

After Shiki enters a coma due to a car accident, he abandons college plans and becomes an assistant at Touko Aozaki's detective agency. Touko values his talent for finding hidden things, demonstrated when he locates her office despite protective bounded fields. His investigations include probing suicide incidents at Fujou Apartments and researching residents of the Ogawa Apartment Complex for a month, uncovering connections between Lio Shirazumi and the magus Araya Souren.

During a February 1999 confrontation with Shirazumi, he survives a near-fatal attack but suffers lasting physical and psychological damage, requiring three months to recover from drug-induced mental trauma. Following Touko's departure from Mifune City, he joins the Ryougi Group as an accountant. He marries Shiki and adopts her surname, becoming Mikiya Ryougi.

In later years, he remains involved with supernatural affairs. In 2007, he corresponds with Touko and enlists Lord El-Melloi II's aid to locate Akira Yakou, a kidnapped relative of the Ryougi family. This decision causes tension, as Shiki and other Ryougi members oppose assisting the Yakou. His role as Shiki's emotional anchor persists, stabilizing her connection to the world.

His relationship with Shiki evolves from friendship to marriage, marked by unwavering loyalty. He frequently visits her during her coma; their interactions, like sharing ice cream, underscore their bond. Shiki nicknames him "Kokutō" for its phonetic resemblance to "Jean Cocteau," a French poet.
