Description
Chaos is a recurring character in Dragon Ball Z, recognized for his unique appearance as a small, pale-skinned Earthling with bright red cheeks and a single hair on his head, usually hidden beneath his cap. He is consistently seen as the inseparable companion and closest friend of the martial artist Tenshinhan. The character's design and concept draw inspiration from the jiang shi, or Chinese hopping vampire, from Qing Dynasty folklore, reflected in his white complexion, red markings, and fighting stances that often involve outstretched arms.
Chaos's background begins as a student of the Crane School under the tutelage of the villainous Master Shen, alongside Tenshinhan. During this time, he was trained in ruthless assassin techniques rather than honorable martial arts. This upbringing initially shapes his personality, making him a cruel and remorseless fighter who takes pleasure in using his psychic powers to harm opponents and cheat in tournaments. However, after witnessing the corruption of his master and the pure-hearted strength of Goku and the Turtle School students, Chaos, along with Tenshinhan, renounces Shen and reforms, becoming a loyal ally to the Z-Fighters.
Following his redemption, Chaos's personality softens considerably, revealing a quiet, childlike, and deeply devoted nature. While he is a brave fighter, he retains a degree of innocence, often showing difficulty with basic arithmetic or understanding jokes. He is fiercely loyal to his friends, especially Tenshinhan, whom he follows without question yet is capable of disobeying if he believes his own course of action is right and selfless. This loyalty and courage are his primary motivations, consistently pushing him to put himself in danger to protect others.
In the story of Dragon Ball Z, Chaos's role is that of a secondary but steadfast support fighter and a key emotional anchor for Tenshinhan. Despite being physically weaker than many of the main Saiyan characters, he willingly participates in the battles against the Saiyans. His most notable act of sacrifice occurs during the battle with the Saiyan Nappa. After seeing Tenshinhan severely injured, Chaos sacrifices his own life by using a self-destruction technique, clinging to Nappa's back and detonating himself in a futile attempt to save his friend. Following his death, he trains on King Kai's planet and is later revived by the Namekian Dragon Balls. As the series progresses and the power of the enemies escalates dramatically, Chaos recedes further from direct combat, often remaining in the background while continuing his training with Tenshinhan.
His most significant relationship is with Tenshinhan, to whom he acts as a devoted partner and brother in arms. He also forms a new friendship with Krillin, whom he initially mocks for being short and bald, traits Chaos himself possesses, developing into a close ally. His first master, Shen, and Shen's brother, the assassin Tao Pai Pai, serve as antagonistic figures from his past. Over the course of Dragon Ball Z, Chaos undergoes minimal physical development, never seeming to age or grow, which adds to his doll-like appearance. His personal journey is one of moral development, moving from an amoral assassin to a heroic figure through the influence of his companions.
Regarding his notable abilities, Chaos specializes in psychic powers known as telekinesis, which allow him to immobilize opponents, control objects with his mind, and even attack an enemy's internal organs directly. He can use telepathy to communicate mentally and has the ability to fly using the martial arts technique of bukūjutsu. His primary energy attack is the Dodonpa, a powerful beam fired from a single finger. He also possesses a unique physical technique where he spins rapidly and launches himself headfirst at an opponent like a drill. His most desperate and dangerous technique is a suicide attack called Jibaku, where he converts all his life energy into a massive explosion.
