Description
Goten is the second son of the protagonist Goku and his wife Chi chi, making him a half-Saiyan, half-Human hybrid. He was born after the Cell Games, following his father's death, which means Goku and Goten do not meet until the 25th Tenkaichi Budokai years later.

In terms of personality, Goten strongly resembles his father, possessing a cheerful, kind, and somewhat naive disposition. While he is generally good-natured, he is also particularly fond of sweets and toys, showing a more childlike side than his older brother Gohan, who was pushed into intense academic studies at a young age. Goten is highly influenced by his best friend, Trunks, the son of Vegeta and Bulma. Trunks often leads the pair into mischief, and though Goten often shows more common sense, he typically follows along with his friend's plans.

Goten's primary role in the story is that of a young prodigy and a key combatant during the battle against Majin Buu. Despite his age, he demonstrates an immense natural talent for fighting. Notably, he achieves the Super Saiyan transformation at just six or seven years old, making him the youngest known Saiyan to reach that form without the intense emotional trigger or rigorous training that his brother Gohan required. This early achievement is attributed to the fact that his father was much more powerful at the time of his conception than when Gohan was conceived. Initially, Goten needs training from Gohan to learn how to properly fly using Bukujutsu, but he masters basic combat skills very quickly. His signature energy attack is the Kamehameha wave, which he sometimes mispronounces as "Kamekameha".

A defining aspect of Goten's role is his relationship with Trunks. Together, they learn the Metamoran Fusion Dance to create a single, immensely powerful warrior named Gotenks. This fused being becomes the last line of defense against the demon Majin Buu after the adult Z-Fighters are defeated. Goten's individual motivations are simple for most of the series; he wishes to meet his father, enjoy his childhood, and become stronger alongside his best friend, rather than possessing the driven, fight-seeking nature of a pure-blooded Saiyan like Goku or Vegeta.

Over the course of Dragon Ball Z and into its sequel series, Goten shows a distinct character development. As a child, he is an eager and talented martial artist. However, as he enters adolescence, he loses much of his passion for fighting. In later appearances, his interests shift towards dating and spending time with friends, and he only engages in combat when absolutely necessary.

In terms of notable abilities, aside from the standard Saiyan traits of rapid healing and the Zenkai power boost after recovering from injury, Goten's most significant power is his mastery of the Super Saiyan form at an extremely young age. He is capable of matching his friend Trunks in battle and can contribute equally to the fusion that forms Gotenks. While powerful for his age, Goten does not achieve the further transformations of Super Saiyan 2 or Super Saiyan 3 on his own during the main events of Dragon Ball Z.
