TV-Series
Description
Kaito Kuroba is a seventeen-year-old high school student who leads a double life as the internationally renowned gentleman thief known as Kaito Kid, or Phantom Thief Kid. He is the main protagonist of the Magic Kaito series and a major recurring character in Detective Conan, serving as a rival and occasional ally to the series' protagonist, Conan Edogawa.
Kaito was born on June 21 and stands at approximately 174 centimeters tall. He is the son of Toichi Kuroba, a famous stage magician who was secretly the original Kaito Kid, and Chikage Kuroba, a former phantom thief known as the Phantom Lady. Kaito decides to take on the mantle of Kaito Kid after discovering a hidden room in his home eight years following his father's mysterious death, which was staged to look like a magic accident. Learning from his father's former butler, Konosuke Jii, that Toichi was murdered by an unknown criminal organization, Kaito assumes the identity of the phantom thief to lure out his father's killers and bring them to justice.
In his civilian life, Kaito is a second-year student at Ekoda High School. He is often mischievous and playful, frequently performing magic tricks and teasing his childhood friend and classmate, Aoko Nakamori, whose father is the police inspector obsessed with capturing Kaito Kid. He also attends school with Akako Koizumi, a witch who is aware of his secret identity because he is the only man immune to her charms, and Saguru Hakuba, a detective who suspects Kaito of being the phantom thief.
The organization that murdered his father is searching for a legendary gemstone called Pandora, which is said to grant immortality when a specific comet passes. This gem is hidden within a larger jewel and can only be identified when held up to the moonlight. Kaito's primary motivation as Kaito Kid is to find this Pandora gem before the organization does and destroy it, thereby thwarting their plans for immortality and avenging his father. To this end, he focuses his heists on large jewels, sending advance notice of his thefts to his targets. After successfully stealing a gem, he always examines it under the moonlight, and if he determines it is not Pandora, he returns it to its owner, often in a dramatic fashion.
While a phantom thief, Kaito adopts a showy, confident, and charismatic persona, earning him nicknames such as the "Moonlight Magician" and the "Heisei Lupin". He is a compulsive trickster who thrives on challenge and enjoys creating elaborate spectacles that lead police on extravagant chases, all while maintaining a perfect "poker face." He possesses a strong sense of honor and dislikes seeing others get hurt, which sometimes leads him to use his skills for purposes other than theft, such as protecting innocent people. This moral code, along with his genius-level intellect, makes him a unique figure in the criminal underworld. One noted weakness is a severe phobia of fish, known as ichthyophobia.
Kaito possesses a remarkable range of abilities, most inherited from his father, a master magician. He is an expert in stage magic, sleight of hand, escapology, and ventriloquism. He is also a master of disguise, able to convincingly impersonate virtually anyone by altering his facial features, voice, and body language in moments. His natural facial resemblance to Shinichi Kudo, the detective whose mind resides in the child Conan Edogawa, makes impersonating him particularly effortless. As the phantom thief, he uses several iconic gadgets, including a white cape that can transform into a hang glider, a playing card gun that fires sharpened metal cards, and various smoke bombs and flash pellets.
In the context of the larger story, Kaito appears as a rival to Conan Edogawa. Conan often deduces his tricks and attempts to thwart his heists, yet Kaito almost always manages to elude capture. Despite their rivalry, the two characters share a deep mutual respect and have been known to cooperate when facing a common, more sinister threat. Kaito has also shown that he is aware of Conan's true identity as the teenage detective Shinichi Kudo. He has also crossed paths with the Black Organization, the primary antagonists of Detective Conan, when he was enlisted by Conan to disguise himself as a key member to protect them. Over the course of his appearances, Kaito develops from a boy seeking revenge into a more protective hero, all while maintaining his dual identity and inching closer to finding Pandora and confronting the organization that killed his father.
