TV-Series
Description
Beto Genta Kojima is a young student at Teitan Elementary School and a founding member of the amateur sleuthing group known as the Detective Boys. He lives in Beika City with his parents, who own and operate the Kojima Liquors store, and is their only child. He also has an uncle who resides in Gifu Prefecture. The character's name is derived from mystery writer Hajime Komine. Genta was in his class when Shinichi Kudo, having been shrunk by a poison, enrolled as Conan Edogawa. Shortly after Conan's arrival, Genta and his classmate Ayumi Yoshida decided to investigate a reportedly haunted mansion. They persuaded Conan to join them, and Genta personally insisted that their skeptical friend Mitsuhiko Tsuburaya come along as well. The mystery of the mansion was solved as a cover for an old homicide, and soon after, the group found themselves on a treasure hunt that brought them into conflict with the mafia. Following these adventures, Genta, Ayumi, and Mitsuhiko officially formed the Detective Boys, with Genta quickly proclaiming himself as the group's leader. Despite his self-appointed title, his lackadaisical leadership abilities are commonly overlooked in the field, and everyone, including Genta himself, unconsciously views Conan as the true leader. The Detective Boys receive requests for help from fellow students, which are left in Genta's shoe locker at school.
Genta has a loud, brash, and outspoken personality, often acting on impulse without thinking through the consequences. This tendency frequently leads the Detective Boys into dangerous and sticky situations. Despite his intimidating demeanor, he is genuinely kind, loyal, and dependable, especially towards his close friends Ayumi and Mitsuhiko. He harbors a deep admiration for his father, whom he describes as a classic Child of Edo. The most dominant and defining aspect of Genta's character is his obsession with food, particularly braised eel on rice. He can eat more than all the other Detective Boys members combined and tends to measure the value of money solely in terms of how many bowls of eel he could purchase with it. This preoccupation extends to his speech, as he frequently confuses Japanese words with similar-sounding ones, especially if those words are related to food. He also struggles significantly with reading even the most common kanji, which occasionally draws ridicule from his peers. Academically, he faces challenges, contrasting sharply with Mitsuhiko's intellectual curiosity. Physically, Genta has a sturdy and corpulent build, weighing approximately 40 kilograms, and is slightly taller and stronger than his classmates. A small, circular bald spot is visible on the left side of his head.
Genta's primary motivation is his desire to be seen as the brave and capable leader of the Detective Boys. He is driven by a youthful enthusiasm for adventure and a genuine, if sometimes clumsy, desire to help others by solving mysteries. His role in the story is multifaceted. He serves as a major source of comic relief, with his antics surrounding food, his linguistic errors, and his impulsive decisions providing much of the humor in episodes focused on the Detective Boys. He also plays a crucial role in the group's dynamic, often acting as the muscle or the one who encourages the others to take action, even if that action is not always wise.
Regarding his key relationships, Genta clearly has a crush on his teammate Ayumi Yoshida. He has been friends with her since preschool and becomes visibly jealous whenever she shows romantic interest or particular attention to Conan. His relationship with Mitsuhiko Tsuburaya is generally on very good terms, as the two are close friends. They share a mutual jealousy of Conan regarding Ayumi's affections, but they do not feel rivalry with each other, likely because Ayumi treats them both only as friends. Genta's relationship with Conan Edogawa is complex. While he generally admires Conan for his exceptional intelligence, courage, and detective expertise, he also feels jealousy toward him, both for his natural leadership of the group and for Ayumi's attention. Nevertheless, he frequently attempts to assert his own position as the leader, though these attempts are often ignored. With Ai Haibara, Genta initially expressed some interest, but this cooled off due to her mature and adult-like manner. Still, the two remain on good standing, and he considers her a friend, never hesitating to help her when the situation demands it.
In terms of development, Genta remains a largely static character throughout the series. Across the manga, anime, films, OVAs, and television specials, his core personality traits of brashness, loyalty, a love for food, and a knack for getting into trouble are consistently maintained without significant evolution. He is typically part of the supporting cast for the Detective Boys, with his character development focusing on reinforcing his established traits rather than introducing new dimensions. His involvement in various cases follows his established pattern of contributing to group investigations and supporting his friends when they are in danger. Notable abilities include his physical strength, which surpasses that of his classmates, and his enormous appetite. He also has a unique talent for inadvertently providing essential clues in cases, often through his simple, direct observations or his unexpected actions, which can be crucial to solving a mystery even if he does not realize it himself.
