Description
Inspector Juuzou Megure is a Police Inspector of Rank 6 in Division 1 of the Tokyo Metropolitan Police Department. He is a veteran officer who commonly serves as the commanding presence at crime scenes, leading investigations and interviewing suspects alongside his subordinates, who include Wataru Takagi, Miwako Sato, Ninzaburou Shiratori, and Kazunobu Chiba.
Megure’s background is marked by a significant event early in his police career. While investigating a case involving a serial hit-and-run driver, he met his future wife, Midori. When Midori insisted on acting as a decoy to draw out the culprit, Megure sustained a head injury while saving her life, resulting in a scar that he consistently conceals by wearing a hat in public. Midori survived the incident, and the two later married. This story explains his trademark attire and his self-consciousness regarding the subject.
As a seasoned detective, Megure is characterized by his strong sense of duty and genuine care for his subordinates. He is passionate about his work but has a tendency to lose his temper and raise his voice when investigations hit a dead end or when his patience is tested. His investigative style is grounded and methodical, though it is sometimes described as conservative, which can limit his ability to think as flexibly as more unorthodox detectives.
Megure maintains several key relationships that define his role in the story. He was a good friend and professional associate of renowned mystery novelist Yusaku Kudo, frequently consulting him on difficult cases. It was through these consultations that a young Shinichi Kudo, Yusaku's son, was exposed to the world of detective work and honed his own skills. Because of this history, Megure holds Shinichi in high regard and has relied on his deductive abilities many times, often lamenting the young man's absence. In stark contrast, he tends to view Conan Edogawa and the Detective Boys as meddlesome children, typically dismissing them as nuisances until their unintentional contributions help solve the case. Megure also has a long-standing history with Kogoro Mouri, as they were former co-officers in the same district. However, Megure has little respect for Kogoro's usual behavior and poor deductive skills, often joking that Kogoro is under a jinx or a bringer of death, as murders inevitably seem to occur wherever he goes.
In terms of professional abilities, Megure relies on his considerable experience and a methodical approach to investigations. While he is not a genius-level detective like Shinichi Kudo, he is capable of organizing a crime scene, managing his team effectively, and following the logical threads of a case once they are presented to him. His primary motivation is to see justice served and to protect the citizens of Tokyo. He possesses a high tolerance for pain and a strong sense of resilience, having endured physical harm in the line of duty without being deterred. While his core personality and role remain consistent, his views evolve subtly over time; for instance, he eventually begins to realize that the frequent appearance of murders around Kogoro might be linked to the presence of Conan instead, showing a slight, gradual awareness of the boy's unusual abilities. He is also depicted as somewhat old-fashioned, having difficulty with modern technology and certain phrases in foreign languages.
