TV-Series
Description
Misao Yamamura is a police officer from the Gunma Prefecture who appears in the Detective Conan series. He is first introduced as a detective and later earns a promotion to inspector, a development that surprises many of the other characters due to his frequent mistakes. Yamamura was born and raised in Gunma, and his decision to become a police officer was inspired by his admiration for the television drama Dangerous Policewoman Story, which starred Yukiko Kudo. In his first case, he was only assigned because the rest of his precinct was unavailable, highlighting his initial lack of experience.

Yamamura’s personality is marked by a combination of enthusiasm, naivety, and a tendency toward superstition. He is easily excited about police work and often compares his experiences to scenes from movies, but he is also easily frightened by the sight of blood, dead bodies, and anything he perceives as supernatural. He is notably absent-minded, sometimes forgetting details he has written down, becoming distracted by personal interests such as a portable television during an investigation, or deserting his post to buy lunch. Despite these shortcomings, he is genuinely supportive and always willing to help solve a case. He shows a sense of modesty by attempting to give credit to others for successful resolutions, and he becomes deeply discouraged when he feels he has failed in his duties, requiring encouragement from those around him to regain his confidence.

Yamamura’s motivation stems from his admiration for the idealized portrayal of police officers in the television show he watched as a child. He also made a childhood promise with Hiromitsu Morofushi to become a police officer, and the two were close friends who built a secret base on the border between Gunma and Nagano before losing contact. This early friendship reinforces his dedication to his profession, even if his skills do not always match his enthusiasm.

In the story, Yamamura serves as a recurring police contact from the Gunma area who frequently encounters the main characters during investigations. He often works alongside Kogoro Mouri, Conan Edogawa, and Heiji Hattori, among others. Because he is so easily fooled and prone to overlooking obvious clues, Conan frequently uses a tranquilizer dart to render him unconscious and then borrows his voice to deliver deductions, making Yamamura the only police officer whom Conan uses in this manner on a regular basis. Other characters, particularly Kogoro, express frustration or disbelief at Yamamura’s abilities, and Conan has voiced concern about the future of the Gunma police under his leadership. Nonetheless, Ran Mouri is among those who show support for his promotion.

Key relationships include his grandmother, Misae Yamamura, who occasionally becomes involved in his cases and lives in Tottori Prefecture. He holds great respect for Kogoro Mouri, often trying to record his deductions to show colleagues. His admiration for Yukiko Kudo is immense, and he once fawned over her publicly when he recognized her. He frequently works with Heiji Hattori on cases involving supernatural themes, often to Heiji’s exasperation. His childhood friend Hiromitsu Morofushi, now a police officer in Nagano, represents a deeper personal connection from his past.

Over the course of the series, Yamamura shows limited but noticeable development. While he remains largely incompetent and reliant on others to solve cases, he does gain confidence and eventually achieves the rank of inspector. He gradually takes on more assignments, and his reputation grows as he participates in more high-profile cases, even appearing in several film installments. His role expands from a rookie detective to a more established, if still bumbling, figure within the Gunma police force.

As for abilities, Yamamura knows the basic procedures of police work and diligently records information in his notebook, though his retention of that information is unreliable. He has some proficiency with firearms, having once shot a fleeing criminal, though the shot was accidental. When given clear guidance, such as through hand signals or text messages from Conan, he is capable of carrying out the correct actions to confront or apprehend a suspect. His greatest strength lies not in deductive reasoning but in his eagerness to participate and his genuine desire to uphold justice, which makes him a functional, if flawed, member of the police force.
