Description
Ryo Saeba operates as the legendary sweeper known as City Hunter, based in the bustling streets of Shinjuku, Tokyo. His services, which range from private investigation to bodyguard duty and even assassination, can be requested by any potential client who writes the signal XYZ on the message board at the east exit of Shinjuku station. Despite his lethal efficiency, Saeba famously only accepts cases from attractive women, a rule that speaks to his complex and often contradictory nature.
Saeba's past is a dark and traumatic one that forged him into the formidable fighter he is today. As a very young child, around three years old, he was the sole survivor of a plane crash in Central America, losing his parents. Left to fend for himself in a war-torn region, he was taken in by a guerrilla army and became a child soldier to survive. During this time, a Japanese man named Hayato Ijuin, also known as Shin Kaibara, became his foster father and gave him the name Ryo Saeba. To gain an edge in the conflict, Ijuin forcibly drugged the young Saeba with a powerful and dangerous hallucinogen called PCP, also known as Angel Dust. This drug unleashed his latent abilities, turning him into a near-superhuman killing machine, but it also caused severe psychological damage and contributed to his amnesia regarding his early life and true age.
Following his time as a guerrilla, Saeba worked as a mercenary for hire in the United States, collaborating with various partners including a man named Mick Angel. After a falling out with the Chicago mafia, he was forced to flee to Japan. There, he formed the City Hunter agency with a former police officer named Hideyuki Makimura. This partnership was tragically cut short when Hideyuki was murdered by a criminal syndicate. With his dying breath, Hideyuki asked Saeba to protect his younger sister, Kaori.
