Description
Falcon, whose real name is Hayato Ijuin, is a prominent character known professionally by his codename Falcon and the nickname Umibozu, which was given to him by his rival and friend, Ryo Saeba. The nickname Umibozu translates to sea monk, a reference to his imposing and intimidating physical appearance. He is a towering, muscular man with a shaved head and is almost always seen wearing a dark military-style uniform and opaque sunglasses.
Falcon operates in the same underworld profession as Ryo Saeba, working as a sweeper in the streets of Tokyo. His history with Ryo predates their time in Japan, originating from their involvement in a civil war in Central America. Initially, they fought on opposing sides, making them enemies. However, their shared experiences and a developed sense of mutual respect eventually forged a complex relationship that balances fierce rivalry with deep, unspoken loyalty.
Despite his fearsome and imposing stature, Falcon has several notable personality quirks that contrast sharply with his appearance. He possesses an extreme phobia of cats, especially kittens, a weakness that often renders him helpless and is frequently exploited by his enemies and Ryo alike. Furthermore, he is remarkably shy and awkward around women, often blushing profusely when faced with romantic or affectionate situations. This gentle, reserved interior stands in stark contrast to his dangerous exterior.
Falcon is a man of formidable skill, considered by many to be nearly on par with Ryo Saeba in combat ability. His background as a mercenary has made him a master of guerrilla tactics, trap-setting, and demolitions. While he is proficient with a vast array of heavy weaponry, including bazookas and machine guns like the German MG42, his weapon of choice for a direct one-on-one duel is the Smith & Wesson Model 29.44 Magnum revolver. For his operations, he frequently uses a Toyota Land Cruiser 60 as his preferred mode of transport.
Key relationships define much of his role in the story. His bond with Ryo is central; they are frenemies who often work together on cases despite their competitive edge. In a significant past incident, Ryo was responsible for the injury that eventually led to Falcon losing his sight. Crucially, Falcon holds no grudge over this, accepting it as an inherent risk of their dangerous profession. Ultimately, the injury to his optic nerve causes him to become permanently blind.
The most important relationship in Falcon's personal life is with Miki, a beautiful and skilled sweeper who he originally trained as a mercenary. Miki was an orphan from a civil war, and after years of pursuit on her part, she becomes his partner and, eventually, his wife. After losing his sight, Falcon retires from active sweeping and becomes the owner and operator of the Cat's Eye Café, which he runs with Miki. This establishment serves as a neutral gathering place and a base of operations for the characters. Despite his blindness, Falcon continues to undertake missions and provide tactical support when needed, relying on his highly honed other senses and instincts, which have become sharper than ever. Throughout the narrative, Falcon develops from a primary rival and antagonist into a trusted, if gruff, ally and a family man, demonstrating that his noble soul and dedication to his friends have always been his true driving force.
