TV-Series
Description
The Houjo-kun student, whose full name is simply Houjo, is a supporting character in the narrative who attends the same high school as Kagome Higurashi in the modern era. He is established as a very popular figure on campus, considered a heartthrob by many of his female classmates. His outward appearance is typical of a kind and earnest teenage boy, and it is this friendly and approachable demeanor that initially draws him into Kagome’s circle.

At his core, Houjo is defined by his exceptionally kind, cheerful, and naively trusting personality. He possesses a genuinely warm-hearted and attentive nature, which manifests most strongly in his deep concern for Kagome’s well-being. Because Kagome’s grandfather frequently invents elaborate and unusual illnesses to explain her repeated and lengthy absences from school, Houjo becomes increasingly worried about her health. His primary motivation is a sincere desire to help her recover, and he goes to great lengths to research various medical conditions and gather supplies he believes will aid in her treatment.

His role in the story is primarily that of a recurring background figure who represents Kagome’s life in her own time period, separate from her adventures in the feudal era. He serves as a contrast to the dangerous and often volatile supernatural world she inhabits with Inuyasha. Houjo’s main narrative function is to provide a glimpse of a normal life that Kagome has left behind, often through his persistent yet kindly attempts to spend time with her or give her gifts. He frequently tries to ask Kagome on dates or deliver herbal remedies and supportive items, but his efforts are almost always in vain, as she often has to leave suddenly to return to the past, or her mind is preoccupied with Inuyasha.

In terms of key relationships, Houjo’s connection is almost entirely with Kagome, and it is a one-sided friendship from his perspective, as he harbors romantic interest while Kagome sees him only as a school friend. He is also indirectly connected to Kagome’s grandfather, who often takes advantage of Houjo’s good nature by keeping the medical devices and folk remedies that Houjo brings for Kagome. Despite this, Houjo remains unaware of the deception and continues to believe that Kagome is simply a fragile girl with a mysterious ailment.

Throughout the series, Houjo shows no significant development or change in his core characteristics. He remains consistently cheerful and optimistic, never growing frustrated or suspicious despite Kagome’s frequent cancellations and distant behavior. His unwavering belief in her fabricated illnesses is a testament to his defining trait of good-natured gullibility. He does not possess any supernatural or notable physical abilities, as he is a normal human student. His only real skills are his academic diligence in researching medical conditions and his determined, if ultimately fruitless, ability to procure health-related gifts for the object of his affection.
