Description
Myoga is a male flea yōkai who originally served as a loyal retainer to the great dog demon Tōga. Following Tōga’s death, Myoga was entrusted with guarding his former master’s gravesite and the sword Tessaiga hidden within it. When Tōga’s son Sesshōmaru came seeking the sword, Myoga fled and later sought out the other son, Inuyasha, to ensure the blade did not fall into the wrong hands. After Inuyasha awakened and began his journey, Myoga resumed his role as a servant and advisor, providing the group with information on current events, enemy demons, and the locations of shards of the Shikon Jewel.

Myoga’s personality is defined by his extreme caution and tendency to flee at the first sign of danger. His sudden disappearances often serve as a warning to the others that trouble is near, and his mere presence in an area can indicate whether it is safe. Despite his cowardice, he is genuinely loyal to Inuyasha and his companions and possesses a wealth of knowledge about demon lore, which he uses to identify unfamiliar foes and explain their weaknesses. His primary motivation is self-preservation, but he also feels a sense of duty inherited from his service to Tōga, which drives him to share information that might help Inuyasha succeed.

As a flea yōkai, Myoga has the ability to drink demon blood, a habit that often gets him swatted by Inuyasha and others. This same ability proves useful when he saves Inuyasha’s life by sucking a spider yōkai’s venom out of his bloodstream, and he can perform similar rescues for other poisoned allies. He is treated as a minor but recurring member of the group, popping up unexpectedly after long absences to deliver news. His key relationships include a close friendship with the sword-smith Tōtōsai, with whom he often stays during his travels. In the anime, he is engaged to another flea yōkai named Shōga, though he constantly avoids the marriage. Over the course of the story, Myoga does not undergo significant character development; he remains the same cautious, knowledgeable, and occasionally useful servant. In the series finale, he chooses to live permanently with Tōtōsai, still keeping an eye on the world from a safe distance.
