Description
In the 1990 anime series Robin Hood, the character commonly referred to as the Bishop of Hereford is known as Bishop Hartford. He serves as one of the primary antagonists in the story, representing a figure of religious authority corrupted by personal greed and a desire for wealth.

As the bishop of Nottingham, his background is rooted in the political and social structure of medieval England, where he holds a position of significant influence. His primary motivation throughout much of the series is avarice. He conspires to adopt a young noblewoman named Marian Lancaster, a scheme which in the original Japanese version is portrayed as a plan to marry her himself. The driving force behind this plan is his desire to seize control of the Lancaster family’s considerable fortune, showing that his spiritual duties are entirely secondary to his material ambitions.

In his role within the story, Bishop Hartford is a close ally of the main villain, Baron Alwyn. The two men work together to oppress the people of Nottingham, with the Bishop using his ecclesiastical authority to support the Baron's tyrannical rule. He is the immediate threat to Marian, keeping her under his watch as he seeks to finalize the arrangement that would grant him her inheritance. This places him in direct opposition to Robin Hood and his band, who work to protect Marian and thwart the Bishop's plans at every turn.

Despite being a villain, Bishop Hartford is not a static character and undergoes notable development as the series progresses. For much of the show, he is depicted as greedy and self-serving, often appearing as a caricature of a corrupt clergyman. However, towards the conclusion of the story, he experiences a change of heart. Unlike Baron Alwyn, who reverts to his villainous ways, Bishop Hartford ultimately reforms and remains loyal to the protagonists. He plays a key role in the final conflict by betraying his former ally and informing Robin Hood of Baron Alwyn’s plot to take over the kingdom, thereby contributing to the villain's defeat.

Bishop Hartford does not possess any notable physical or martial abilities. His power is derived entirely from his political and religious status, which gives him legal authority over Marian and allows him to collaborate with Baron Alwyn on an even footing. His character serves as a critique of hypocrisy, using a position meant for spiritual guidance as a tool for personal enrichment and exploitation. His defining traits are his cunning and his relentless, though ultimately unsuccessful, pursuit of wealth.
