Description
Genma Saotome is the father of Ranma Saotome and the first-generation head of the Saotome School of Anything-Goes Martial Arts.

In his youth, Genma trained alongside his close friend Soun Tendo under the legendary martial arts master Happosai. As an adult, Genma took his young son Ranma on a decade-long training journey. Before leaving, he made a solemn vow to his wife, Nodoka, that he would raise Ranma to be a true man among men; failure would require both father and son to commit seppuku, a pact that later drives much of his anxiety and behavior.

During a training trip to the legendary cursed training ground of Jusenkyo in China, Genma's ignorance of the Chinese language led him to disregard the warning signs. He fell into the Spring of Drowned Panda, which curses him to transform into a giant panda whenever splashed with cold water. Exposure to hot water reverses the transformation, returning him to his human form. Unlike his son, who resents his curse, Genma seems relatively comfortable as a panda, often using the form to avoid responsibilities, escape difficult conversations, or simply enjoy a meal of bamboo leaves. While in panda form, he loses the ability to speak and communicates by writing on a small signboard.

Personality-wise, Genma is a complex figure of contradictions. On one hand, he is a highly gifted and innovative martial artist capable of creating powerful techniques. On the other, he is profoundly lazy, greedy, cowardly, and irresponsible. He frequently concocts schemes to get free food, steal valuable items like the Dragon's Whisker to cure his baldness, or simply avoid any form of work, leading to his status as a permanent freeloader at the Tendo Dojo for much of the series. His signature technique, ironically, is not a mighty attack but the Mouko Rakusei Se, or Crouch of the Wild Tiger, a dramatic and shameless groveling pose he uses to beg for forgiveness when his plans go awry.

Genma's motivations are largely selfish, often prioritizing his own comfort over his son's well-being. He is infamous for making reckless promises that trade Ranma's future for short-term gain. Most notably, he arranged Ranma's engagement to Akane Tendo to fulfill a pact with his old friend Soun, thereby securing a place to live and a successor for the Tendo Dojo. However, this was not a singular incident. Years earlier, he promised Ranma to a young girl named Ukyo Kuonji in exchange for her family's okonomiyaki cart, only to flee with the cart and never look back. Such actions are the reason Ranma frequently calls him a "damn father" and why he is the primary source of chaos and conflict in the story.

Despite his numerous flaws, Genma's role in the story is a combination of antagonist, comic relief, and reluctant mentor. He serves as a catalyst for many of Ranma's adventures and misadventures. His key relationships are with Soun Tendo, with whom he shares a deep, if lazy, friendship, often spending their days playing shogi and go. His relationship with Ranma is strained, built on a foundation of harsh training methods, including the infamous "Cat Fist" training that gave Ranma a lifelong fear of felines. Yet, rare moments reveal a genuine, if often misguided, paternal affection, such as covering his sleeping son with a blanket or weeping while using a humiliating technique to teach a lesson. He lives in constant fear of his wife, Nodoka, who holds the power to enforce their seppuku pact, forcing him to go to great lengths to hide his and Ranma's curses from her.

In terms of development, Genma remains largely static throughout the series; his deceptions are exposed, he suffers comedic consequences, and he continues his lazy lifestyle. However, his martial arts abilities remain significant. While he has passed on most training to his son, he is secretly a master of two forbidden and powerful fighting styles he created: the Yamasenken, a loud, aggressive style of a home-invading bandit, and the Umisenken, a stealthy, thieving style that emphasizes hiding one's presence. He also possesses powerful grappling techniques like the Jigoku no Yurikago, or Cradle from Hell, and can temporarily create a giant, powerful version of himself by focusing his battle aura, though he cannot maintain this form for long. These abilities prove that when genuinely motivated, Genma is one of the most formidable fighters in the series, overshadowed only by his own laziness and cowardice.
