TV-Series
Description
Cologne is the revered great-grandmother of Shampoo and holds the position of leader within the Chinese Amazon village, the Joketsuzoku. Her true age is a subject of some ambiguity, with the manga suggesting she is over one hundred eighteen years old, while the anime portrays her as being around three centuries old. Despite her advanced years, which have left her in a small, wizened form, she remains a figure of immense power and authority. In her youth, she was known to be as tall and beautiful as her great-granddaughter, a stark contrast to her current appearance. She travels to Japan alongside Shampoo, opening the Cat Cafe in the Furinkan neighborhood as a base of operations.
Cologne is a master strategist who typically prefers to observe the chaotic lives of the Nerima residents from a distance, finding amusement in their misfortunes. Her primary motivation is to secure a worthy husband for her great-granddaughter, and she has set her sights on Ranma Saotome, whom she addresses as bride-groom or future son-in-law. To this end, she frequently concocts schemes and employs pressure to force a union between Ranma and Shampoo. However, her feelings toward Ranma are not purely transactional; she holds a genuine fondness for him and recognizes his raw potential. Consequently, she often acts as a mentor, pushing him to become stronger so that he may be a more suitable match for Shampoo.
Her relationship with Ranma is complex, as she is both an adversary and a teacher. She has taught him and his rivals several advanced techniques, including the Kachu Tenshin Amaguriken, the Hiryu Shoten Ha, and the Bakusai Tenketsu. Beyond her connection to Ranma, Cologne shares a deep and contentious history with the ancient martial arts master Happosai. Decades ago, he visited her village, and despite his lecherous and thieving nature, the young Cologne secretly held feelings for him. Their past romance ended poorly, with Happosai breaking her heart and departing with a stolen family heirloom, the Nanban mirror. In the present day, they have become bitter rivals who cannot stand one another.
As a grand master of Amazon martial arts, Cologne is one of the two most formidable fighters in the series, with her skill rivaled only by Happosai himself. She has effortlessly defeated top-tier fighters like Ranma without exerting her full strength. Her martial prowess is complemented by an extensive knowledge of ancient techniques that have been lost to time, as well as expertise in arcane lore, cooking, mythology, and magical artifacts. She navigates the world by bouncing or pogoing on a gnarled wooden staff, which also serves as a weapon to discipline those who insult her, a frequent occurrence for the hapless Mousse. While her raw power may not match the peak energy attacks of younger fighters, her technique, speed, and centuries of experience make her an almost unbeatable force in combat. Over the course of the story, she develops from a primary antagonist scheming against Ranma into a recurring source of wisdom and training, though she never fully abandons her mission to see him married into her family.
