Description
Géraldine la Rose Noire is the name given to the character Kodachi Kuno in the French adaptation of the anime Ranma ½. She is introduced as a primary antagonist during a martial arts rhythmic gymnastics tournament arc, where she first appears as the star competitor from a rival school, determined to eliminate all opposition. Her nickname, the Black Rose, reflects her dramatic and elegant yet menacing persona.

Géraldine is a student at an elite girls' academy and the younger sister of another recurring character, Julian Storm, who is known as Tatewaki Kuno in the original version. Her background is one of privilege, coming from a wealthy and eccentric family, and she has a flair for the dramatic, often making entrances and exits while scattering black rose petals and laughing maniacally. Despite her aristocratic bearing, she is deeply unbalanced, employing underhanded and cruel tactics to defeat her opponents before official matches even begin, viewing such actions as simply ensuring victory. However, beneath this unhinged exterior, there are hints of a more sensitive and traditionally capable individual; she is known to be an excellent cook and a skilled homemaker, a facet of her personality that is sometimes used for comedic effect when she attempts to drug Ranma with her cooking.

Her primary motivation becomes a single-minded, obsessive love for Ranma Saotome in his male form. This infatuation begins not during a competition, but when Ranma accidentally saves her from a fall after she is knocked unconscious by a kettle he was carrying while chasing a pig. From that moment, she considers herself in love with him and believes he is destined to be hers. Unlike Ranma's other suitors, such as Akane or Ukyo, Géraldine has no formal engagement or long-standing promise to justify her pursuit; her claim is based solely on this romantic fantasy. Consequently, she shows no hesitation in using any method to eliminate rivals or ensnare Ranma, including paralysis gas, sleeping powders, rigged gymnastics equipment, and other poisons of her own creation. She is a master of martial arts rhythmic gymnastics, a discipline that allows her to weaponize apparatus like ribbons, clubs, and hoops with incredible agility and acrobatic flair.

Within the story, Géraldine serves as a recurring comic antagonist whose schemes are regularly foiled. Her role is defined by her passionate rivalry with Akane Tendou, whom she sees as her primary obstacle to winning Ranma's affection. This dynamic is mirrored in her relationship with her brother, Julian, who is infatuated with Ranma's female form and despises the male Ranma; the siblings are often at odds, with each supporting the other's delusional pursuit only because it would remove a rival for their own intended target. Géraldine notably despises Ranma's cursed female form, viewing her as a romantic rival rather than understanding that they are the same person.

While her behavior is typically self-centered and unscrupulous, her character shows rare moments of vulnerability and development. She has demonstrated genuine care for her father, being eager to see him after a long absence, and for her brother, showing that her family does mean something to her beneath the manic surface. In a rare moment of self-awareness, she has even admitted that she knows Ranma does not love her, but she chooses to ignore this reality and continue her pursuit for her own satisfaction. Her notable abilities extend beyond combat. She is a prodigy in chemistry and herbalism, creating a vast array of toxins, anesthetics, and truth serums. Her skill in cooking is directly tied to her devious nature, as she often uses beautifully prepared meals as a delivery system for her potions. Combined with her immense flexibility and athletic prowess, these skills make her a formidable and unpredictable opponent, even if she is ultimately outmatched by Ranma’s raw talent in a fair fight.
