Description
Ono Toufuu-sensei, commonly known as Dr. Tofu, is the local bone doctor and chiropractor in the town of Furinkan, where he runs the Ono Bone-Setting Clinic not far from the Tendo family dojo. He is a tall, handsome young man whose name is a play on the historical calligrapher Ono no Tofu, and he is one of the most knowledgeable medical figures in the series. His training covers chiropractic care, acupuncture, moxibustion, and a deep understanding of the human body, and his clinic treats many elderly patients as well as the younger martial artists who constantly injure themselves. He is so respected in the community that he is the regular physician for the Tendo household.

In personality, Dr. Tofu is normally calm, warm, and gently playful, with a scholarly curiosity about unusual injuries and martial arts techniques. He owns many books on the human body and is often asked by Ranma Saotome to help research mysterious conditions and cursed techniques. His one glaring weakness is his devotion to Kasumi Tendo, the eldest Tendo daughter. Whenever Kasumi appears, his glasses fog over, he loses all composure, and he begins to babble nervously, often dancing around with his beloved human skeleton model, which he has named Betty-chan and treats as if it were a real companion. In these states he has accidentally worsened patients' injuries, and regular visitors to his clinic learn to flee when Kasumi arrives.

His motivations are rooted in genuine care for his patients and a sincere, if hopeless, love for Kasumi. He seems to have little ambition beyond running a good clinic and quietly supporting the people around him. This gentle nature made him the childhood crush of Akane Tendo, who had been his patient since elementary school and looked up to him as a kind older figure. Akane's feelings for him create some early romantic tension when Ranma arrives, since she compares the mature, dependable doctor with her loud and insulting fiancé. For his part, Dr. Tofu treats Akane warmly but never returns her feelings, seeing her only as a younger friend in need of advice and reassurance.

Dr. Tofu's role in the story is that of a healer, explainer, and occasional martial arts consultant. He sets broken bones, treats dislocations, and repairs the various damage the fighters inflict on one another, and his expertise helps Ranma uncover cures for techniques such as Happosai's moxibustion curse and Cologne's full body cat's tongue pressure point attack. Though he is never seen training, his practical skill is considerable. He can identify who dislocated a joint simply by examining how it was done, he once rigged Ranma's back so that he would lose the ability to walk several minutes later, and he can move with such quiet skill that even Ranma fails to sense him approaching from behind. In the original anime, he demonstrates his fighting ability directly by racing through a swarm of frog henchmen and putting them all to sleep with rapid pressure point strikes, a feat that even Ranma and Akane had struggled with.

His key relationships define much of his screen time. With Ranma, he is a helpful ally and a rare adult whose abilities Ranma quietly respects. With Soun Tendo, he is the trusted family doctor. The One thing that keeps him from being a perfect figure is his behavior around Kasumi, which reduces a competent professional to a nervous wreck and provides a recurring source of comedy. He also briefly employs both Genma Saotome and Shampoo as assistants around the clinic, showing his tolerance for odd and incompetent help.

Over the course of the series, Dr. Tofu gradually fades from the main story. His appearances become less frequent as Akane's feelings for Ranma solidify and his function as a romantic rival and early support character runs its course, and in the original manga he stops appearing well before the ending. There is no dramatic departure or tragic fate attached to him; he simply recedes into the background of the neighborhood. The anime, however, keeps bringing him back for original episodes, where he remains the same kindly, slightly eccentric doctor whose only failing is that love for Kasumi turns him into a different person entirely. Overall, he stands out as a rare figure of stability and compassion in a chaotic world, a skilled healer whose unrequited love makes him both admirable and deeply human.
