Description
Mariemaia Khushrenada is a central figure in the animated film Mobile Suit Gundam Wing: Endless Waltz. She is the daughter of Treize Khushrenada, the former leader of the Organization of the Zodiac, and Leia Barton, the daughter of Dekim Barton. Born in the year After Colony 189, Mariemaia lost her mother when she was only two years old and was subsequently raised by her grandfather Dekim. From a very young age, Dekim indoctrinated her with the belief that, as Treize's daughter, it was her destiny to become the ruler of the Earth Sphere. In reality, Dekim saw her only as a puppet figurehead through which he could seize power.

At the age of seven, Mariemaia became the public face of the Mariemaia Army, a force composed largely of former OZ soldiers loyal to Treize's memory. In December of AC 196, she launched the Mariemaia Rebellion, declaring independence for Colony X-18999 and declaring war against the pacifist Earth Sphere Unified Nation. She kidnapped Vice-Foreign Minister Relena Darlian to eliminate opposition, and her forces quickly occupied the ESUN presidential office in Brussels. During the conflict, Mariemaia was portrayed as confident, prideful, and dignified beyond her years, often speaking of history as an endless waltz of war, peace, and revolution that she would finally end. However, beneath this imperious facade, her childish vulnerability occasionally surfaced, most notably through her treasured possession of a music box left to her by her mother.

Mariemaia's motivations were shaped entirely by Dekim's manipulation. She genuinely believed she was fulfilling her father's wishes by conquering Earth, and she carried herself with the conviction of a destined ruler. Her role in the story is that of a tragic antagonist: the child leader of a military coup, unaware that she is merely a tool for her grandfather's ambitions.

Her key relationships defined her arc. Dekim Barton, her grandfather, raised her with lies and viewed her as disposable; when she hesitated during the climax, he shot her without hesitation, revealing his complete lack of genuine affection. Relena Darlian, her hostage, served as a foil and eventual catalyst for Mariemaia's change, offering her a chance to realize her mistakes when she slapped her after the shelter was breached. Lady Une, a former subordinate of Treize, rescued Mariemaia from the collapsing shelter and later became her caretaker and mother figure, helping her understand her father's true ideals.

Mariemaia's development is the core of her character. After being shot by Dekim, she survived and was freed from his indoctrination. In the aftermath, she recognized the errors of her ways, became much more humble, and was able to live as a child rather than a political puppet. By AC 197, she was shown recovering in a wheelchair, visiting Treize's grave with Lady Une, beginning a new life removed from the conflict.

Notable abilities include an intelligence and composure unusual for a seven-year-old, a result of her grooming. She possessed no combat skills or special powers, but her ability to command and inspire loyalty among the Mariemaia Army was a product of her name and the manipulation around her. Her only notable personal item is the music box from her mother, which symbolizes her hidden emotional need for love and family.
