Description
Quatre Raberba Winner is one of the five Gundam pilots featured in Mobile Suit Gundam Wing: Endless Waltz and serves as the pilot of Gundam Sandrock. He is the only son and heir of the wealthy Winner family from the L4 colony cluster, born on 12 December AC 180 on the Winner Resource Colony. He is the youngest of thirty children and has twenty-nine older sisters, all of whom were conceived through artificial reproduction because natural birth in space had become difficult for his family over generations of living in the colonies. Quatre alone was born naturally, and his mother, Quatrina, died during his delivery. His father, Zayeed, concealed this from him by claiming that Quatre was also an artificial birth, which left Quatre with lingering feelings of inadequacy and a fear of being easily replaced. Raised with affection, he received an excellent education and showed notable gifts in music, especially the violin, and painting.
During his youth, a shuttle hijacking brought him into contact with the Maganac Corps, a group of forty Middle Eastern fighters. Instead of demanding his release, Quatre chose to help them and saved the life of their leader, Rashid Kurama, earning their lasting loyalty and friendship. This encounter also introduced him to Instructor H, one of the engineers behind the Gundam program, who recognized his potential and trained him to become the pilot of Gundam Sandrock. Although he came from a pacifist family and his father disapproved of his involvement, Quatre accepted the role as part of Operation Meteor and descended to Earth to fight alongside the Maganacs.
In personality, Quatre is gentle, humble, and deeply empathetic. He is a firm believer in pacifism and a reluctant soldier who feels sorrow whenever he must kill, often urging enemies to surrender and apologizing when violence becomes unavoidable. He is refined and courteous in manner, and his sensitivity extends to an unusual ability he calls the heart of outer space, a form of extrasensory perception that allows him to sense the emotions of others. Despite his distaste for combat, he is motivated by the conviction that fighting is sometimes necessary to gain and protect peace, and he repeatedly risks himself to protect his comrades and innocent people. He is also a capable strategist and the only member of his family with the aptitude to pilot a Gundam.
His development is marked by both breakdown and recovery. After his father died when the Winner colony destroyed his resource satellite, a grief-stricken Quatre used the family's resources to build the Wing Zero, whose neural interface, the Zero System, overwhelmed his mind and drove him into a destructive rampage across space. The shock of nearly killing his close friend Trowa Barton brought him back to his senses, and he spent the rest of the conflict seeking to atone for his actions. He later learned to use the Zero System without losing control, even installing a copy of it in his Sandrock Custom to coordinate the other Gundam pilots in battle, and he eventually became the de facto leader of the group during the final phase of the war. Through these experiences he grew from a gentle but uncertain young man into a true leader with genuine kindness and strength, earning the trust of Heero Yuy, Duo Maxwell, Chang Wufei, and Trowa, and serving alongside Relena Peacecraft and Lucrezia Noin in defense of the Sanc Kingdom.
In Endless Waltz, Quatre is the one who proposes that the Gundams be disposed of by sending them into the sun, believing they are unnecessary in a peaceful world. When a new rebellion forces the pilots back into action, he and the Maganac Corps work to recover the Gundams from their course toward the sun so the pilots can respond one final time. He takes part in this last operation, which the pilots carry out without killing anyone, and ultimately accepts the destruction of all mobile suits, including the Gundams, as the necessary end of the era of war.
