Description
Ed, also called Edo, is a core Alpha Gang member subordinate to Dr. Z. He has pale skin, a round, freckled face, spiky purple hair, brown eyes, and a chubby build. His standard outfit is a tight purple short-sleeved shirt with the Alpha Gang logo and three pink stripes on each sleeve, black suspenders attached to high-waisted light brown pants, pink gloves, and maroon boots.
Shy and timid, Ed is frequently overshadowed and yelled at by Ursula and Zander for talking. He exhibits a near-constant habit of eating and often unintentionally jinxes the gang's plans. Despite occasionally offering insightful observations about flaws in their schemes, his suggestions are routinely ignored.
Born in the future, Ed was placed in an orphanage alongside Ursula, Zander, and Rod and Laura's father. Dr. Z adopted and cared for them as his own children, integrating them into the Alpha Gang. He joined Dr. Ancient's mission to the Mesozoic Era on Christmas Day 2127, but sabotage caused their timeship, the Backlander, to crash in the present day, becoming their mobile base, Zeta Point.
Throughout the first season, Ed primarily functions as a sidekick to Ursula and Zander. He typically summons the ankylosaur Tank as his dinosaur partner, occasionally using Spiny or Terry. His contributions to battles are minimal, and he typically suffers defeat, though he achieves occasional victories against dinosaurs. His role diminishes when Rod and Laura take over dinosaur-hunting, reducing the original trio to comedic relief. In the season finale, he assists in the battle against Seth and the Dark Pterosaur, using Tank to help breach the latter's outer shell before Tank is defeated internally. He then returns to the future with the gang.
In the second season, "Mesozoic Meltdown," the Alpha Gang forms an uneasy alliance with the D-Team against the Spectral Space Pirates. Ed participates in various time-traveling arcs, though the trio often pursues tangential or comedic subplots. In Ancient Rome, they are captured and forced to use Terry in gladiatorial matches. During the Caribbean Sea arc, they adopt pirate personas but fail to locate treasure. In Ancient China, disguised as Pigsy alongside Dr. Z posing as Sanzo Hoshi, Ed commands Tank to dig a vertical tunnel and later uses Tank's Ultimate Earth move to defeat Gabbro's Carcharodontosaurus. Other arcs, like Ancient Japan and Ancient Persia, involve them facing recurring comedic threats. The Renaissance Paris arc provides deeper exploration; after crashing their Alpha Jet, they assist the Teen Musketeers, relate to their orphan status, and openly discuss their own backstory. Ed later uses the Alpha Jet to rescue the Musketeers from a cliff and summons pterosaurs to save the D-Team from a collapsing bridge. In the final battle at Vasasi Castle, Tank under his command is defeated by Gigas's Spectral Lancer.
The manga portrayal diverges significantly. Here, Ed is less friendly toward other Alpha Gang members due to lack of appreciation, finding solace in computers. He traps Max and Rex in a complex 4D maze filled with dinosaurs; his systems are destroyed when they electrocute the floor. Max's compliment about the maze being "awesome" momentarily pleases him, marking the first acknowledgment of his efforts.
In the DS game, Ed appears as the second boss, disrupting a town's power grid. He primarily utilizes Earth-element dinosaurs like Edmontonia, Alpha Wuerhosaurus, Saichania, Alpha Kentrosaurus, and occasionally Utahraptor.
Additional media include comedic 4koma strips where the D-Team manipulates his physique, deflating him to a skinny state using Max's visor horns. His Trading Card Game statistics depict him as a common or gold rare card with abilities centered around searching for Move Cards or the "Tank" card, which requires Ed as the designated character.
Trivia notes list his age as 24 during "Mesozoic Meltdown" on NagoyaTV's website, suggesting he may have been 23 earlier. His Japanese name "Edo" potentially references the Earth dinosaur Edmontonia, though unlike other gang members, his name does not reverse the syllable order.
