Description
Jonathan is an android butler created by Rex Owen's biological parents, Dr. Ancient and Dr. Cretacia, before 2126. Originally assigned to protect Rex, he accompanied the family on a time travel mission to the Mesozoic Era aboard the Backlander timeship. During a conflict in the time vortex, Dr. Z ejected Rex and his parents. Jonathan intervened to protect the infant, resulting in himself, Rex, and the timeship being scattered across different time periods. Jonathan arrived in the past with his head inverted, causing memory loss and malfunction.
Throughout the first season, Jonathan appeared in various amnesiac roles: an airplane pilot, a Bali tour guide, a painter, a ninja race organizer named "Johnny Cook," and a Moscow train conductor. Seth located him on the train to extract data from his memory banks. During this encounter, Jonathan shielded Max, Rex, and Zoe from a volcanic attack, sustaining damage exposing his robotic form. After repairs at the D-Lab, Chomp accidentally corrected his head position, initiating memory recovery. Seeing Rod and Laura triggered his recollection of Seth's data theft.
Regaining full memories, Jonathan explained the Alpha Gang's origin: researchers from 2126 who traveled back to save dinosaurs from extinction using dinosaur cards. He detailed how Dr. Z and Seth betrayed Rex's parents, leading to their temporal separation. Jonathan infiltrated Zeta Point to recover stolen data, defeated Spiny, and aided the D-Team and Alpha Gang against Seth. He delivered critical Secret Dinosaur cards during the Black T. rex battle, intercepting an attack to protect Rex before collapsing. Rex's parents later repaired him, and he departed in the Backlander at the season's end.
In the second season, Jonathan piloted the Backlander through multiple eras – the Cretaceous Period, Ancient Rome, the Caribbean – pursuing Spectral Space Pirates and Cosmos Stones. Following Dr. Z's faulty repairs, the timeship could not preset destinations, causing uncontrolled jumps. Jonathan fully repaired it mid-season. During the finale, a gel jark incapacitated him, crashing the ship. Once repaired, he piloted the Backlander against the Dark Pterosaur until Seth commandeered it. Jonathan then piloted the Space Pirates' ship to return the Ancients, Alpha Gang, Seth, and dinosaurs to 2126.
