Description
In the anime Nadia - The Secret of Blue Water, Argo is the name used for the primary antagonist in the first Italian dubbing of the series, while his original name is Gargoyle. He is the undisputed and powerful leader of the mysterious organization known as Neo-Atlantis. Argo’s ultimate ambition is to resurrect the new Atlantis in order to dominate the world. His goals are specifically to destroy Captain Nemo and the submarine Nautilus, as well as to acquire the Blue Water stones.
Argo was formerly the Prime Minister of the kingdom of Tartessos, where Nemo was the king, and the two were once close friends from childhood. However, their visions for the future were fundamentally incompatible. Nemo believed in humanity and wished to live peacefully alongside other humans, while Argo held an extremist view, placing his faith solely in the Atlantean people and their superior scientific knowledge. He deeply mistrusted ordinary humans, whom he saw as servants who had been repeating the same mistakes for 12,000 years since the fall of Atlantis. His dream was to enslave humanity, believing it to be the natural order of things and the only way for the Atlanteans to reclaim their mastery over the world and achieve progress. A key event in their shared past was Argo’s attempt to seize control of the Tower of Babel, a structure with immense destructive power. Nemo, trying to prevent him from using it to quickly dominate the world, destroyed the tower, an act that also led to the destruction of their entire city and its population. This catastrophe resulted in Argo feeling betrayed and Nemo fleeing his country to fight against his former friend aboard the Nautilus.
Argo’s personality is characterized as Machiavellian, enigmatic, and charismatic, making him a formidable enemy. His ambition is matched only by his tenacity, and he is ruthless and devoid of pity, capable of any act to achieve his goals. He is an Atlantean supremacist who hates humans and aims to subjugate them. He is also responsible for the deaths of the parents of the young girl Marie. Throughout most of the series, Argo’s face is hidden by a hood and mask, which is said to be reminiscent of the Ku Klux Klan and underscores his racist ideology. When his face is finally revealed in the last episode, he is shown to be a middle-aged man with dark skin, a prominent nose, and graying shoulder-length hair. In a final irony, he discovers moments before his death that he is himself a human, the very race he despises. Despite his hatred, he repeatedly asks his former friend Nemo to join him in Neo-Atlantis. Argo speaks in a consistently low voice and prefers to manipulate his enemies by acting on their weaknesses. His organization, Neo-Atlantis, possesses incredible military power and scientific knowledge far superior to that of ordinary humans, fielding increasingly powerful and destructive war machines throughout the series.
