Description
Toshiyuki Aoshima is a human character who appears in the Oh My Goddess! series. He is a student at the Nekomi Institute of Technology, around twenty-one years old, and is known on campus as a playboy and something of a casanova. Aoshima is the cousin of the wealthy and sophisticated Sayoko Mishima, with whom he is often associated. In the anime adaptation, he is frequently seen driving a distinctive sports car, an Enzo Ferrari, which, like his personality, is flashy and attention-grabbing. His name, shared with other characters in the series, is a reference to a Japanese scale model company.

Aoshima’s primary role in the story is that of a rival and an antagonist to the protagonist, Keiichi Morisato. He becomes intensely and obsessively enamored with the goddess Belldandy, and much of his behavior is driven by a desire to claim her for himself. His infatuation begins after a failed attempt to seduce her, which only fuels his obsession with something he feels he cannot have. Aoshima stands as a thematic opposite to Keiichi; where Keiichi is earnest and kind, Aoshima is underhanded and self-serving, making him a recurring obstacle that often forces Keiichi and Belldandy to reaffirm their bond. While he is persistent in his efforts, his schemes are rarely successful and often backfire, bringing out the best in the central relationship rather than destroying it.

His motivations are rooted in a possessive infatuation with Belldandy, seeing her as a prize to be won rather than a person to be loved. He will stop at nothing to achieve his goal, including setting up a rival motor club, attempting to sabotage Keiichi’s activities, and deliberately creating misunderstandings. In one notable incident, he misinterprets a situation where a young woman is learning to cook for him, believing instead that she is making a lunchbox for Keiichi, and tries to use this to drive a wedge between Keiichi and Belldandy. His character serves as a catalyst for conflict, testing the strength of the main characters' relationship, though his schemes are generally more irritating than genuinely malevolent.

Key relationships define Aoshima's interactions. He is a close ally of his cousin Sayoko, and the two frequently collaborate in their attempts to break up Keiichi and Belldandy. Their partnership, however, seems to be based more on mutual convenience and shared goals than on deep familial affection, and it begins to dissolve as Sayoko’s own feelings for Keiichi become more complicated. Aoshima also has a notable, though one-sided, relationship with the goddess Urd. After being punished by her lightning multiple times for his misdeeds, the mere sight of her is enough to fill him with terror. Throughout the series, Aoshima’s character shows little significant development. He remains a persistent, if often comedic, thorn in the side of the main couple. While his presence is most strongly felt in the earlier parts of the story, his role diminishes over time as the narrative focus shifts to other conflicts and characters.

Aoshima possesses no supernatural or divine abilities. His primary resources are his wealth, his charm, and his social influence. He is characterized as an "envious yuppie" who uses his material advantages to challenge Keiichi, such as when he bulldozes the facilities of Keiichi's motor club. His persistence and cunning make him a capable schemer, but his plans are consistently thwarted by the goddesses' powers or by Keiichi's own resourcefulness and integrity.
